Abhishek Sharma goes berserk against New Zealand, smashes second-fastest fifty by an Indian in T20Is
New Delhi: Team India star Abhishek Sharma smashed the second-fastest T20I fifty by an Indian on Sunday, January 25. The explosive left-hander achieved the feat with his 14-ball half-century in the third T20I between India and New Zealand at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. Abhishek also broke David Warner's record for the fastest fifty by a batter against New Zealand in T20Is.
Abhishek, who is known for his fearless approach in the shortest format, took the attacking route fromthe onset despite losing his opening partner Sanju Samson on a duck on the first ball of India's 154-run chase against the Kiwis in the third T20I.
He got off the mark in style with a huge six against pace Jacob Duffy on the first ball he faced during India's innings, and there was no looking back for the swashbuckling left-hander. Abhishek mauled the New Zealand bowling attack, taking the bowlers to the cleaners with some exhilarating strokes across all parts of the ground.
After scoring 11 runs off the first three balls he faced in the game, the left-hander slammed a six and a four against Kyle Jamieson in the third over to move to 23 runs off just six deliveries in his innings. He completed his fifty off just 14 balls with a six against Duffy on the final delivery of the sixth over.
Thanks to his exploits with the bat, India posted 94/2 in the first six overs, their second-highest Powerplay total in T20Is. Abhishek surpassed Hardik Pandya on the elite list of fastest fifty by Indians in T20Is and stands only behind his mentor Yuvraj Singh, who smashed a stunning 12-ball fifty against England in the 2007 T20 World Cup.

Abhishek also broke David Warner's record for the fastest fifty against New Zealand in T20I. Warner smashed a 20-ball half-century against the Kiwis in a T20I in Auckland in 2018. The opening batter also broke his teammate Ishan Kishan's record for the fastest half-century by an Indian against the Kiwis in T20Is. Kishan scored a 21-ball fifty in the 2nd T20I against New Zealand on Friday.

Abhishek starred with the bat as India thrashed New Zealand by 8 wickets in the 3rd T20I to clinch the five-match T20I series with an unassailable 3-0 lead. The hosts chased down the target of 154 runs comfortably with as many as 60 balls to spare with the help of Abhishek's unbeaten 68 off 20 balls and skipper Suryakumar's 57 not out off just 26 balls.
India clinched the series against the Kiwis to bag their ninth consecutive bilateral T20I series victory, a streak that started in 2024.
