5 Lifestyle Myths About Cervical Cancer That Need to Go

5 Lifestyle Myths About Cervical Cancer That Need to Go
Cervical cancer remains one of the most preventable cancers affecting women, yet it continues to be widely misunderstood. Despite significant advances in cervical cancer screening, vaccination, and treatment, myths surrounding lifestyle and personal choices persist. These misconceptions often instil fear and cause dangerous delays in seeking timely care. It is imperative that such myths are debunked, as emphasised by leading global health institutions such as the World Health Organization.
Dr Anjali Kumar, Director, Obstetrics and Gynecology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, debunks five common myths about cervical cancer that urgently need to be addressed.
One of the most pervasive myths is that cervical cancer is caused by poor hygiene or unhealthy lifestyle habits. This belief is not only incorrect but also harmful. The primary cause of cervical cancer is persistent infection with the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a common virus that can affect anyone who has been sexually active, regardless of hygiene or lifestyle choices.
This misconception fuels stigma and prevents many women from getting screened. In reality, even women with a single lifetime sexual partner can contract HPV. Risk is not determined by the number of partners but by exposure to the virus, which can occur in any sexually active individual. This myth often creates a false sense of security, leading to delayed or missed screenings.
While balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and avoiding tobacco can strengthen immunity and help reduce overall cancer risk, they cannot replace cervical cancer screening. Pap smears and HPV tests can detect precancerous changes long before symptoms appear. Even women who follow exemplary lifestyle practices can develop cervical cancer if routine screening is neglected or postponed.
Another dangerous myth is that younger women do not need to worry about cervical cancer. In reality, precancerous changes can begin within a few years of contracting HPV, which often occurs in women in their 20s and 30s. Waiting for symptoms or delaying screening until later in life can mean missing the stage when the disease is most treatable.

The HPV vaccine is a highly effective preventive tool, but it does not protect against all cancer-causing strains of the virus. Vaccinated women must continue regular cervical screening. Believing that the vaccine offers complete protection can lead to complacency, undermining the combined prevention strategy of vaccination alongside routine screening.
Cervical cancer prevention is not about blame, morality, or achieving a “perfect" lifestyle. It is about awareness, timely screening, vaccination, and access to appropriate care. Breaking these myths empowers women to make informed decisions without fear or shame. When myths are eliminated, prevention becomes effective and cervical cancer becomes a disease we can truly control.
