Why Cervical Cancer Is Rising Among Younger Women: Doctors Explain The Changing Trend
Cervical cancer, once considered a disease affecting mostly middle-aged and older women, is increasingly being diagnosed in younger age groups across many countries, including India. Experts report a clear shift in age patterns over the years, with cases now being observed in women as young as 25. Earlier generations typically saw diagnoses in the mid-30s or later. This represents roughly a 10-year shift toward a younger age at diagnosis and is attributed to factors such as early sexual activity and low awareness about HPV.
The primary reason behind the rising incidence of cervical cancer is infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted virus responsible for nearly all cases of cervical cancer.
Dr. Abhinav Narwariya, Consultant and Unit Head, Medical Oncology, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Shalimar Bagh, explains that while most HPV infections clear on their own, persistent infection with high-risk HPV types can cause precancerous changes in the cervix that may progress to cancer over time. Younger women who acquire HPV early in life have a longer window during which these changes can develop.
Changing social patterns also play a significant role. Earlier onset of sexual activity, multiple sexual partners, and inconsistent use of barrier protection increase the likelihood of HPV transmission. The cervix in adolescent and young women is biologically more susceptible to HPV infection, making early exposure particularly risky.
Another major contributor is the low uptake of the HPV vaccine. Despite strong scientific evidence showing that HPV vaccination can prevent the majority of cervical cancer cases, vaccination coverage remains suboptimal. This is largely due to lack of awareness, myths, social stigma, and limited access in certain regions. As a result, many young women miss the opportunity to be vaccinated before exposure to the virus.
Inadequate screening further compounds the problem. Regular screening through Pap smears or HPV testing can detect precancerous lesions early, when treatment is simple and highly effective. However, younger women often delay or skip screening due to the absence of symptoms, fear, or the misconception that they are too young to be at risk.
Lifestyle factors such as smoking, poor nutrition, and conditions that weaken the immune system can also increase the chances of persistent HPV infection and cancer progression.
The rising incidence of cervical cancer in younger women highlights an urgent need for action. Strengthening HPV vaccination programs, promoting safe sexual practices, and ensuring timely screening can significantly reduce the burden of this disease. With the right preventive strategies in place, cervical cancer can move closer to becoming a rare condition rather than a growing threat.
