4 Reasons OpenAI Is Betting Big On India: AI Adoption, Talent, Partners & Support
US-based AI firm and ChatGPT-maker OpenAI has begun expanding its India presence by opening new offices in Bengaluru and Mumbai, after opening New Delhi office last year.
OpenAI has also announced its partnership with the IT giant Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to build AI infrastructure in India over the next few years. In the initial phase, TCS will develop AI infrastructure with 100MW capacity, with an option to scale to 1 GW.
Meanwhile, OpenAI will be partnering with leading Indian universities to build AI-ready talent for a tech-driven economy.
The first cohort includes Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, All India Institute of Medical Sciences New Delhi, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, University of Petroleum and Energy Studies (UPES), and Pearl Academy, OpenAI said in a statement.
This has posed a question: why is OpenAI, US-based firm, betting big on India?
Four factors are contributing in making India a perfect investment destination for these AI firms.
1. AI Adoption At A Fast Pace: India is one of the largest AI adoption markets for these US-based companies, and the pace of adoption is accelerating at an unprecedented pace, thanks to its huge demography, cheap data, and computer literacy.
India is now home to more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, from students and teachers to developers and entrepreneurs.
2. Talent: These companies don’t have hard times to find a suitable talent to continue their operations. India is a large English-speaking community with a huge talent base.
To nurture and cultivate proper talent, OpenAI is partnering with leading institutions of India. This will help to trim the existing skill gap across the country, making it easier to build a workforce suitable to their needs and requirements.
3. Partners: At the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in Delhi, Sam Altman, OpenAI co-founder, launched a nationwide initiative with leading Indian partners to expand access to AI and unlock its economic and societal benefits in the world’s largest democracy.
OpenAI and Tata Group also announced a strategic enterprise collaboration to accelerate AI-native transformation at global scale.
This builds on recent partnerships with leading companies in India, including JioHotstar, Eternal, Pine Labs, Cars24, HCLTech, PhonePe, CRED, and MakeMyTrip.
4. Support: OpenAI is getting full policy-level support from the government side. In fact, India government, intending to make India AI leader, is not leaving any stone unturned. India is hosting Global AI Impact Summit, 2026 to bring top leaders, policymakers and changemakers across the world to discuss on how our policies and regulations should guide forward for AI-led future.
