Zerodha launches fixed deposits on Coin app
Zerodha’s non-trading investment platform, Coin app, has launched fixed deposits (FDs), the company said in a blog post, allowing users to invest their savings in debt instruments alongside mutual funds.
Moneycontrol was the first to report that Zerodha had invested in Blostem, a New Delhi-based startup to power FDs on the Coin app.
“Rates are scattered, processes differ, and tracking maturity dates and interest becomes harder than it should be,” Zerodha said, adding that it plans to solve these issues on the Coin app.
Coin is a separate app from Kite, Zerodha’s direct stock investment and trading app. Coin is the primary platform for long-term investments, including mutual funds, insurance and the National Pension Scheme.
Higher returns than regular bank FDs
Zerodha said customers can book FDs across multiple banks, compare rates and track invested amount, accrued interest and upcoming maturities in one place.
Since small finance banks (SFBs) offer higher interest rates, fintech platforms offer FDs from these banks.
For first investment with a bank, investors will need to complete a one-time KYC, which includes PAN, Aadhaar verification, basic details, and nominee information.
Digital FDs without a savings account
The fully digital process will enable consumers to open FDs without having to open a savings bank account with the same financial institutions.
Coin platform lets consumers invest in commission-free direct mutual funds without any fees or platform/distributor commission. It is also Zerodha’s platform for the popular Systematic Investment Plan (SIPs).
Zerodha philosophy
The Bengaluru-based discount broker’s idea behind FDs is to offer fixed-income products along with low-risk long-term investment products on the Coin platform.
“Kite is the active investment platform, whereas Coin has been the passive investment platform, where consumers put money and forget, and come back to withdraw after a few years,” Neelesh Verma, product head and assistant vice president, Mutual Funds and Fixed Income, told Moneycontrol in an earlier interaction.
FDs on fintech platforms
The FD space is attracting heightened interest from startups as well as the venture capital industry. Peak XV Partners led around $25 million funding round in wealthtech startup Stable Money.
Zerodha founders’ investment fund Rainmatter-backed smallcase and WintWealth also offer FDs on the platform, though fixed deposits are not their primary product. Flipkart-backed super.money also offers FDs on its platform.
