Zayed Khan Says Parsi-Muslim Mother Wanted Her Ashes Immersed In River, Breaks Silence On Hindu Last Rites
Zayed Khan has revealed that his mother Zarine Khan wanted her ashes immersed in a river. The revelation comes months after her funeral sparked conversation due to Hindu rituals being followed despite her mixed religious background. Speaking in a recent interview with Zoom, Zayed addressed the questions surrounding the final rites and explained that the decision was rooted in his mother’s personal wish, not public perception.

Zayed shared that for his family, religion has always been a deeply personal matter. Reacting to the discussions around Zarine Khan’s last rites, he clarified that their beliefs are guided by humanity over rigid definitions. “We as a family find religion to be something very personal to you, and how you want to approach it, and not something which is better and which is worse. These are not things that are good to say. We define ourselves by being a very secular family, and we don’t need to say why," Zayed said.
He also spoke about the values followed at home, adding that his family supports people from different backgrounds and focuses on providing opportunities rather than drawing boundaries based on religion.
Recalling a deeply personal memory, Zayed revealed what his mother had once expressed about her final moments. He said she was sitting by a river when “the thought just passed her head, saying that if I ever go, I want my ashes to flow in this river. I want to be free".
For Zayed, fulfilling that wish became non-negotiable, regardless of the criticism that followed. “Whatever your mother’s last wishes, it will be done. It doesn’t matter what other people say. It doesn’t matter how hateful they can be. I don’t blame them, halat aise hai (situation is such), unfortunately. Unn halaton ko badalne mein waqt lagega (It will take time to change those circumstances)."
Zarine Khan passed away on November 7 last year at her Mumbai residence at the age of 81 due to age-related ailments. Her funeral drew attention after Zayed performed Hindu rituals, even though she had Parsi roots and was married into a Muslim family. Zarine had a brief association with films and appeared in Tere Ghar Ke Samne (1963) alongside Dev Anand. She later married Sanjay Khan in 1966 after meeting him in the 1960s. She is survived by her husband Sanjay Khan and their children—Zayed, Sussanne Khan, Farah and Simone Arora.
