Yuki Bhambri Inches Close To History! Qualifies For US Open Men's Doubles Semifinal
India's Yuki Bhambri, partnering with New Zealand's Michael Venus, has advanced to the men's doubles semifinals of the US Open 2025.
The Indo-Kiwi pair stunned the 11th-seeded duo of Nikola Mektic and Rajeev Ram with a commanding 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 victory on Court 17 in New York on Thursday.
Currently ranked World No. 32 in men's doubles, Bhambri holds the distinction of being India's highest-ranked player in the category. With this win, he has scripted history by reaching his first-ever Grand Slam semifinal in doubles.
Bhambri had only managed to reach the pre-quarterfinals of the US Open in 2024, when he played alongside French partner Albano Olivetti.
He now has the chance to become the first Indian champion at the US Open since 2015, when Leander Paes (mixed doubles) and Sania Mirza (women's doubles) both triumphed in New York.
On Friday, Bhambri and Venus will take on Britain's accomplished pair Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury.
Mixed Fortunes for Other Indian Players
While Bhambri has made headlines with his breakthrough run, it has been a disappointing campaign for other Indian doubles specialists at Flushing Meadows this year.
Rohan Bopanna, the 44-year-old veteran and reigning Australian Open champion, teamed up with Monaco's Romain Arneodo but was knocked out in the first round on Saturday.
Arjun Kadhe and Ecuador's Diego Hidalgo also made a first-round exit.
On Sunday, Anirudh Chandrasekar and Vijay Sundar Prashanth bowed out with a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Brazil's Fernando Romboli and Australia's John-Patrick Smith.
Bhambri on His Grand Slam Dream
Speaking to JioHotstar, Bhambri was candid about his aspirations and what this semifinal run means for him.
“It's every player's dream when they first hold a tennis racket – to win a Grand Slam," Bhambri said.

“When you go out there, that's what you are aiming for. This is what we all grew up watching on television. My idols were Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi. Watching them lift trophies at the US Open and Wimbledon was one of the reasons I picked up a racket in the first place.
When you're out there on the court, the ultimate goal is to win a Slam. That's what every one of us is striving to do. We're giving our best and, hopefully, one day we'll achieve that."
