Your eyes hold secrets to how long you will live. New alarming study finds link between eyes, heart disease and diabetes. Check details

New research reveals a strong link between eye health and overall well-being and if you take regular eye check ups, it can help you detect cardiovascular diseases early. Experts have sounded alarm that eye can tell about your hidden heart troubles and diabetes. Don't skip your annual eye exams—for the health of your vision and, potentially, your heart and other vital systems.
A new research is gaining attention as it shows how the retina and vascular system are connected. According to a report in Prevention, your retinal blood vessels can act like a window into heart health and overall health, including lifespan and aging markers, a study has found. The study has highlighted that people over overlook eyes during their routine health check-up. It shows the under-discussed relationship between your eyes and heart, and how the retina and vascular systems, in particular, may indicate overall health, aging markers, and lifespan. The finding has re-ignited conversations in cardiology and eye care, suggesting that retinal scans may soon become an essential tool for predicting heart disease.
“Today, screening of the eyes can help detect diabetes. With the help of AI, a simple retinal photograph can predict the chances of diabetic retinopathy and even provide insights into a person's cardiovascular health,” he said. Explaining the science, he added that retinal blood vessels allow non-invasive detection of “early signs of prediabetes, leukemia, and certain cancer related changes," Dr Mahipal Singh Sachdev, chairman of the scientific committee at IIRSI was quoted as Hindustan Times as saying.
The study was published in ScienceAdvances in October and it explored how the networks of tiny retinal blood vessels—may be a “window into the body's circulatory system,” explains Jacqueline Bowen, O.D., president of the American Optometric Association, that could help doctors predict, detect, prevent, and treat heart disease. People with a “simpler” or less branched microvasculature tracks with more inflammation, higher risk of heart disease and stroke, and shorter lifespan, researchers have found.
Eye strokes can detect heart disease
During a routine eye exam, optometrists and ophthalmologists use advanced imaging tools to examine the retina — the light-sensitive layer at the back of your eye. According to research published in PMC, this simple check-up can detect early warning signs of systemic diseases, including heart problems, according to TOI. Subtle changes in the retinal blood vessels may point to high blood pressure or other cardiovascular risks, making eye exams an unexpectedly powerful tool for early detection.ALSO READ: Delhi AQI: Delhi continues to breath toxic air as AQI crosses 400 mark in several areas on 10th consecutive day. How heart and eye are connected?
According to experts, retina is the only place in the body where blood vessels can be directly and non-invasively observed without needing a biopsy. It contains the same type of vascular network found in the brain and kidneys, offering valuable insight into a person's overall health. “That's why dilated eye exams — where eye drops are used to widen the pupil and make internal structures easier to see — have long allowed clinicians to examine this vasculature and diagnose underlying cardiovascular conditions like diabetes or hypertension,” says Dr. Bert, according to Prevention.Because the eye's blood vessels often mirror what's happening throughout the body, retinal imaging also helps optometrists detect early metabolic changes linked to endocrine, autoimmune, neurological, and other systemic diseases, notes Dr. Bowen.
What have the experts found?
In recent years, specialists have noticed that certain retinal changes are more common in people with heart disease, such as:Eye strokes: These happen when blood flow to parts of the eye is temporarily blocked. They leave tiny marks on the retina, reflecting reduced oxygen and nutrient supply. Repeated small blockages may point to underlying vascular issues like atherosclerosis or uncontrolled high blood pressure — conditions that raise the risk of heart attack or stroke.
Retinal vessel damage: Subtle injuries to retinal blood vessels — including microaneurysms, hemorrhages, or narrowed vessels — can signal poor circulation and low-grade inflammation associated with chronic heart disease. Regular eye exams help detect these signs early, allowing timely steps to manage cardiovascular risk.

Why heart disease shows up in the eyes
Heart disease often develops quietly, damaging blood vessels throughout the body long before symptoms appear. Because the eyes contain extremely delicate vessels, they can reveal vascular damage earlier than other organs. Warning signs include:Narrowed or twisted vessels
Tiny leaks or bleeding
Blocked vessels (eye strokes)
Structural changes in the retina
If your eye doctor spots any of these issues, they may refer you to a GP or cardiologist for further evaluation.
How eye exams help prevent heart attacks and strokes
Dr. Joseph Nezgoda, retina specialist and spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology, notes that OCT scans can reveal more than just eye problems — they can detect signs linked to the heart, brain, and nervous system. “Your ophthalmologist may be able to take an image of your eye to help find cardiovascular disease earlier than before,” he says.Early diagnosis can be life-saving. Spotting heart disease in its early stages allows for timely lifestyle changes, treatment, or monitoring that can prevent major events like heart attacks or strokes.

Who should pay extra attention
While everyone benefits from regular eye exams, certain groups are more likely to show early signs of heart disease in the retina, especially those who:Have high blood pressure
Have high cholesterol
Have type 2 diabetes
Smoke or previously smoked
Have a family history of heart disease
Are over 40
If this applies to you, ensure your exam includes retinal imaging such as an OCT scan. Many optometrists, especially in the UK, now include this in routine check-ups.

What you can do today
1. Book an eye test: Even if your vision seems fine, a check-up could reveal early signs of health issues.2. Ask for retinal imaging: OCT scans offer a detailed look at your eye health and can uncover hidden warning signs.
3. Share your medical history: Tell your eye doctor about conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, or family history of heart disease.
4. Follow up on unusual findings: If your optician recommends further testing, act quickly. Early investigation is always better.
5. Take care of your heart: Healthy habits — balanced eating, regular exercise, good sleep, and stress management — protect both your heart and your eyes.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
