'Your Body Is The Only Equipment You Need': Milind Soman On Why Fitness Doesn’t Need Fancy Gyms
On International Women’s Day, nearly 6,000 women gathered at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium as the eighth edition of Zydus Pinkathon returned to Delhi after more than six years. The women-only run, founded by Milind Soman, brought together runners across distances ranging from 3 km to 5 km to ultramarathons of 50 km, 75 km and 100 km.
The event celebrated participation across generations and abilities, with grandmothers, first-time runners, mothers carrying infants, cancer survivors and visually impaired athletes sharing the same start line. Speaking to News18, Milind Soman reflected on the evolution of Pinkathon, the philosophy behind inclusive running, and why consistency – not intensity – remains the foundation of lasting fitness.

Pinkathon has always been positioned as more than a marathon. When you look at these mascots, what does strength mean to you today? Has that definition changed over the years?
Strength today means awareness. When I started, I associated strength largely with physical endurance, how far you could run, how long you could push. Over the years, especially through Pinkathon, I’ve realised strength is far more layered. It’s emotional resilience, self-belief, discipline, compassion, and the courage to begin. When I look at the women who run, whether they are 20 or 70, I see strength as the decision to show up despite self-doubt, social expectations, health challenges, or fear. That definition has definitely evolved. Today, strength is less about performance and more about presence.
Every year, Pinkathon brings first-time runners alongside ultra-athletes. How do you design an event that feels equally empowering for a 3K beginner and a 100K runner?
The philosophy is simple: respect every distance. A 3K can be life-changing for someone who has never exercised before. A 100K is just another personal challenge for someone else. The medal is the same emotion: achievement. We design Pinkathon as a celebration, not a competition. Training programs are inclusive, ambassadors mentor first-timers, and the atmosphere is non-intimidating. The idea is not to glorify the longest distance, but to honour the courage it takes to start.
After over a decade of building Pinkathon, what’s the most emotional or unforgettable moment that reminded you this initiative is bigger than sport?
There have been many, but the moments that stay with me are when women tell me Pinkathon changed the trajectory of their lives. Women who were battling illness, depression, and social restrictions found confidence through running. Once, a participant told me she signed up secretly because her family didn’t believe women should run. A year later, she came back with her daughter. That generational shift, that’s when you realise this is not about medals or timing chips. It’s about freedom.
You’ve made endurance and minimalism look effortless. What’s one fitness myth you wish Indians would stop believing immediately?
That fitness requires expensive equipment, fancy gyms, or complicated diets. Your body is the only equipment you need. Walk, run, climb stairs, do push-ups, and sit on the floor. Also, the myth that fitness is about how you look. It’s not aesthetics. It’s energy, mobility, and longevity. If your goal is only appearance, you’ll quit. If your goal is health, you’ll continue.
What are your secrets to being fit at 60?
There are no secrets. Simplicity and consistency. I’ve been active all my life. I eat simple home-cooked food, mostly local and seasonal. I sleep early. I don’t overtrain. I spend time outdoors. Most importantly, I don’t see fitness as a project. It’s just part of living. If you start young, wonderful. If you start at 50 or 60, that’s wonderful too. The body responds at any age.
You often say consistency beats intensity. What does a realistic week of movement look like for you right now – not the Instagram version, the real one?
Some weeks, I run 3–4 times. Some weeks I don’t run at all. I walk almost every day. I do basic strength exercises, push-ups, squats, planks, nothing fancy. If I’m travelling, I move wherever I am. No gym. No complicated routine. Some days are high energy, some are slow. The key is I don’t stop. Movement is daily, intensity is optional.

If someone has never exercised before and feels intimidated, what’s the smallest first step you’d actually recommend tomorrow morning?
Wake up 20 minutes earlier and go for a walk. That’s it. No targets. No timing apps. No comparison. Just walk and observe your breathing. Do it for seven days. After that, your body will ask for more. Fitness should feel inviting, not overwhelming.
What’s harder: training the body or training the mind?
The mind, without question. The body adapts quickly. The mind negotiates, makes excuses, and fears discomfort. But the beautiful part is, when you train the body consistently, the mind slowly follows. Discipline in one area strengthens everything else. Endurance is not muscular; it’s mental.
