WPI Inflation Surges To 8.3% In April 2026, Highest Since September 2022 As Fuel Prices Spike
The Wholesale Price Index (WPI)-based inflation rises to 8.3% in April 2026 on an annual basis, compared with 3.88% in March and 2.26% in February.
WPI Inflation Data for April 2026: India’s wholesale price inflation accelerated sharply in April 2026, hitting its highest level since September 2022, driven largely by a surge in fuel and crude oil prices, according to the latest official data released on May 14.
The Wholesale Price Index (WPI)-based inflation rose to 8.3% in April 2026 on an annual basis, compared with 3.88% in March and 2.26% in February. The latest print marks a sharp jump in wholesale inflation amid rising global crude oil prices and higher costs across fuel, metals and manufacturing segments.
“Positive rate of inflation in April, 2026 is primarily due to increase in prices of mineral oils, crude petroleum & natural gas, basic metals, other manufacturing and non-food articles etc,” the commerce and industry ministry said in a statement.
The WPI inflation levels higher than this was last recorded in September 2022, when the WPI inflation had hit 6.34 per cent.
On a month-on-month basis, WPI rose 3.86% in April 2026 compared to March 2026, indicating broad-based price pressure during the month.
The government said the positive rate of inflation in April was primarily due to an increase in prices of mineral oils, crude petroleum & natural gas, basic metals, other manufacturing and non-food articles.
Fuel & Power inflation witnessed the sharpest spike among major categories. Inflation in the segment jumped to 24.71% in April from 1.05% in March. The index for the fuel and power group rose 18.22% month-on-month to 181.7, led by a 29.37% increase in mineral oil prices.
Within fuel products, petrol inflation surged 32.4% year-on-year in April, while high-speed diesel (HSD) inflation came in at 25.19%. LPG inflation stood at 10.92%.
Crude petroleum and natural gas inflation also spiked sharply to 67.18% in April, while crude petroleum inflation alone stood at 88.06% during the month.
Primary articles inflation rose to 9.17% in April from 6.36% in March. Prices of crude petroleum & natural gas increased 16.42% month-on-month, while food articles prices rose 1.41%.
Meanwhile, manufactured products inflation increased to 4.62% in April from 3.39% in the previous month. Prices rose across 21 of the 22 manufacturing groups tracked under WPI, with notable increases seen in basic metals, chemicals, textiles, food products and machinery.
Food inflation, however, remained relatively contained compared to fuel-led pressures. The WPI Food Index inflation edged up to 2.31% in April from 1.85% in March.
Among key food items, onion prices remained under pressure with inflation at negative 26.45%, while potato inflation stayed deeply negative at minus 30.04%. Pulses inflation also remained in negative territory at minus 4.03%.
However, inflation in eggs, meat & fish accelerated to 6.68%, while milk inflation stood at 2.56%.
The data also showed rising pressure in industrial inputs. Inflation in basic metals climbed to 7%, chemicals and chemical products inflation rose to 5.09%, while textiles inflation accelerated to 7.3% in April.
