World Protein Day 2026: Why Protein Is No Longer Just For Fitness But Essential For Everyday Health

World Protein Day 2026: Why Protein Is No Longer Just For Fitness But Essential For Everyday Health
Protein has long suffered from a perception problem in India. It is often associated with bodybuilding powders, gym routines, and elite athletes, rather than everyday health. Yet, on World Protein Day 2026, health experts and nutrition innovators alike are emphasizing a simple truth: protein is not optional, it is fundamental to human health at every age and life stage.
“Protein is very important for our body at every age. It helps build muscles, repair tissues, maintain strength, and support immunity," says Dr Rahul Agarwal, Senior Consultant – General Medicine, CARE Hospitals, Hitech City, Hyderabad.
Despite this, protein deficiency remains surprisingly common, particularly among women and older adults. According to Dr Agarwal, the consequences often go unnoticed or are misattributed to ageing or stress.
“I see many patients, especially elderly people and women, who are not taking enough protein. They complain of weakness, tiredness, body pains, hair fall, and slow recovery after illness. Often, the reason is low protein intake," he explains.
The science is clear. Protein provides amino acids, the building blocks required to maintain muscle mass, repair cells, support immune function, and sustain metabolic health. Without adequate intake, the body’s ability to recover, repair, and remain resilient declines.
Daily requirements are also frequently underestimated. “An average adult should take around 0.8 to 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. But people recovering from illness, surgery, or those who are physically active may need more," Dr Agarwal notes.
The challenge in India is less about availability and more about dietary patterns. Traditional meals often centre around carbohydrates, with protein playing a secondary role.
“Simple foods like eggs, milk, curd, dal, chana, paneer, soy, nuts, fish, and chicken are good protein sources. The key is to include some protein in every meal instead of eating mostly rice or roti alone," he advises.
This shift in thinking from protein as a supplement to protein as a daily staple is also driving innovation within India’s food and dairy sector.
“On World Protein Day, our focus is on making high-quality nutrition a seamless part of the Indian diet," says Siddharth Runwal, Founder, Provilac.
India’s dairy heritage has always been protein-rich, but modern consumers are now seeking greater nutritional density along with convenience.
“While we value the heritage of traditional dairy like Kharvas, which is effectively nature’s original protein powerhouse, and A2 milk for being naturally gentle on the stomach, many people today are looking for even more nutritional value from their daily dairy," Runwal explains.
This evolving demand reflects broader lifestyle changes, faster schedules, increased health awareness, and a growing recognition that nutrition must work harder to support modern living.
“Provilac was the first in India to launch high-protein milk to bridge the gap between basic dairy and fitness-focused nutrition. We wanted to move away from chalky supplements and offer a natural, delicious alternative," he says.
Using advanced processing techniques, Runwal says the aim is to integrate protein into familiar foods rather than relying on powders and pills.
“Through a specialized ultra filtration process, we have packed 25g of protein into a single serving without relying on added protein powders or synthetic fillers," he adds.
Equally important is making protein appealing and accessible to a wider audience.
“Our goal is to make hitting protein targets something people actually enjoy. By offering a variety of flavors like cacao, coffee, kesar elaichi, chickoo, matcha, and mango, we are proving that healthy choices don’t have to be boring. We are evolving dairy from just a breakfast staple into a convenient, tasty tool for everyday wellness," says Runwal.
This convergence of medical advice and food innovation points to a larger shift in how India views nutrition. Protein is no longer just about muscle building, it is about healthy ageing, faster recovery, sustained energy, and disease resilience.
Ultimately, the message from both clinicians and industry is consistent: protein should be a conscious part of daily eating, not an afterthought.
As Dr Agarwal puts it simply, “On World Protein Day, I would advise people to check their plate, make sure protein is a regular part of your diet. It helps maintain strength, energy, and overall health."
In a country where dietary habits are deeply cultural, changing perceptions will take time. But the growing awareness around protein signals an important shift, from viewing nutrition as tradition alone to seeing it as a powerful tool for lifelong health.
