World Economic Forum LIVE: Trump says Greenland agreement is still being negotiated

Leading a strong Indian delegation at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the country has given a clear message about its willingness to partner across the economic spectrum, and the country commands a strong resilience against global debt worries.

In an interview with PTI here, the Minister also stated that all ten states present have effectively showcased their potential in accordance with the mantra of cooperative and competitive federalism outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“India's message here is very clear on how the Prime Minister has transformed and opened the Indian economy in the last 11 years. This time's message is partner with India and subscribe to the future,” he said.

A day after U.S President Donald Trump stated he will have a ‘good' trade deal with India, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday (January 22, 2026) said it is very encouraging, given India's position and deep engagement on global trade matters.

Mr. Trump had said here last evening that the U.S. is going to have a good trade deal with India and described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “fantastic man” and his friend for whom he has great respect.

Asked about Mr. Trump's remarks, Vaishnaw told PTI, “Given India's position and deep engagement on trade matters, it is very encouraging”.

Vaishnaw is leading a large Indian delegation here for the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting, comprising Union Ministers, as well as Chief Ministers and senior ministers from several States. Besides, more than 100 Indian CEOs are also here.

The encounter comes hours before U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, with Washington pushing to secure a deal to end the almost four-year war.

President Donald Trump ‍said the details of a U.S. ‌agreement over Greenland were still being worked out on Thursday (January 22, 2026), speaking one day after stepping back from a tariff threat and ruling out the use of force to seize the Danish territory.

“It's really ‌being negotiated ‌now, the details of ‍it. But essentially it's total access. ‍It's - there's no end, there's no time limit,” Mr. Trump told Fox Business Network in an interview from Davos, where he is attending the World Economic Forum.

European Union leaders are gathering for emergency talks on Thursday (January 22, 2026) to chart a new course in transatlantic relations after a tumultuous two weeks dominated by U.S. President Donald Trump's renewed threats to take control of Greenland.

On the eve of their summit, Mr. Trump dramatically backed away from his insistence on “acquiring” Greenland, a semiautonomous territory of Denmark. For the first time, he said that he would not use force to seize the island. Trump also dropped his threat of slapping tariffs on eight European nations supporting Denmark.

Yet nothing suggests that the unpredictable U.S. leader won't change his mind again. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen this week cast doubts over his reliability after he appeared ready to renege on an EU-U.S. trade deal sealed in July that was meant to end further tariffs.

The framework deal ‌on Greenland agreed with U.S. President Donald Trump would require NATO allies to step up on Arctic security and the first results of this will be seen this year, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte told Reuters on Thursday (January 22, 2026).

It was now up to NATO commanders to work through the details of extra security requirements, Mr. Rutte said in an interview at the World Economic Forum's (WEF) annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, adding that he was sure non-Arctic NATO allies would want to contribute to the effort.

“We will come together in NATO with our senior commanders to work out what is necessary,” an upbeat Mr. Rutte said, adding: “I have no doubt we can do this quite fast. Certainly I would hope for 2026, I hope even early in 2026.”

Renewed verbal attacks from U.S. President Donald Trump are prompting Canadians to rally behind Prime Minister Mark Carney, who earned ‍a rare standing ovation in Davos for openly decrying powerful nations using economic integration as weapons and tariffs as leverage. In his speech, Mr. Carney called on nations to accept that a rules-based global order was over and pointed to Canada as an example of how “middle ‌powers” might act together to avoid being victimised by American hegemony.

“When the rules no longer protect you, you must protect yourself,” he said. “Middle powers must act together because if you are not on the table, you are on the menu.”

In response, Mr. Trump retorted that Canada “lives because of the United States,” and told the crowd in Davos that Mr. Carney should be grateful for the United States' previous largesse, addressing the prime minister directly: “Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”

OMV Chief Executive Alfred Stern warned on Thursday (January 22, 2026) ‍that overly stringent rules for building a plastics circular economy ‌risk stifling emerging technologies before they become commercially viable.

Speaking at a World Economic Forum panel in the Swiss alpine resort of Davos, Mr. Stern said the sector faces an “innovator's dilemma” as new processes must compete with petrochemical supply chains refined over decades.

It is cheaper to produce, use and then dispose of plastic materials, Mr. Stern said, adding that financial incentives were needed to invest in ‌collection and sorting systems.

The ‍world needs to more than double oil production, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright ‌said on Thursday (January 22, 2026), while criticising the European Union and the U.S. state of California for wasting money on what he described as inefficient green energy.

In recent years, the World Economic Forum's discussions on energy have centred on ways to boost lower-carbon policies. But during Mr. Wright's discussion with energy company Occidental's CEO Vicki Hollub in Davos, they emphasised that the world will depend on oil for decades to come.

Mr. Wright said corporate environmental regulations in the European Union posed ‌risks to energy cooperation with the ‌United States and warned they could affect U.S. gas imports ‍into Europe.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday (January 22, 2026) at the launch of his so-called Board of Peace in Davos that Iran wants to hold talks with the United States, and that Washington was willing to do so.

Mr. Trump recalled that the United States had struck Iranian uranium enrichment sites last year to prevent Tehran from making a nuclear weapon.

“Can't let that happen,” he said. “And Iran does want to talk, and we'll talk.”

U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff today said “a lot of progress” ‌had been made in Ukraine peace talks and that negotiations were down to one last issue, as Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Switzerland for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump.

Mr. Zelenskyy's spokesperson said in a statement that the Ukrainian leader had arrived in Switzerland today and would meet with Mr. Trump at 1 p.m. (1200 GMT) before delivering a speech at 2:30 p.m. (1330 GMT).

Talks with the U.S. on Greenland will aim to ensure China and Russia do not get military and economic access to the Danish Arctic territory, NATO's chief said today.

Following talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos, Switzerland, yesterday, U.S. President Donald Trump backed down on threats to seize Greenland by force, saying he had reached a “framework” of a deal on the island that satisfies him.

“It was a very good discussion,” Mr. Rutte said at a Ukrainian event on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in the Swiss mountain resort.

Mr. Rutte said the next talks will build on the results from his meeting with Mr. Trump.

One “work stream” to emerge from his meeting with Trump was how NATO allies - including its seven members in the Arctic - can “collectively make sure that the Arctic stays safe, that the Russians and the Chinese stay out”.

The other issue, he said, was “that we ensure that the Chinese and the Russians will not gain access to the Greenland economy” or militarily.

Mr. Trump's threats over the vast Arctic territory - an autonomous part of NATO member Denmark - had plunged relations between Europe and its key ally Washington into their deepest crisis in decades.

Britain will not take part in Thursday's signing ceremony for US President Donald Trump's “Board of Peace” in Davos, Foreign Minister Yvette Cooper said. “There's a huge amount of work to do, we won't be one of the signatories today,” Cooper told BBC television from the Swiss mountain town, amid UK concerns about the inclusion of Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose forces are still fighting in Ukraine after invading in 2022.-- Reuters

The United States remain committed to ‌Ukraine, NATO Secretary Mark Rutte said on Thursday (January 22, 2026) at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Asked if U.S. President Donald Trump was committed to Ukrainian independence and ‌sovereignty, Mr. Rutte ‌replied: “Yes! And I have never ‍doubted this.”

“What we need ‍is to keep our eyes on the ball of Ukraine. Let's not drop that ball”, Mr. Rutte said.-- Reuters

NATO Secretary Mark Rutte on Thursday ‌(January 22, 2026) said he had discussed with U.S. President Donald Trump how to keep the Arctic region safe.

“We had a very good discussion on that”, Mr. Rutte told the World Economic Forum in ‌Davos.

Mr. Rutte said ‌further talks would “make sure ‍when it comes to Greenland ‍particularly, that we ensure that the Chinese and the Russians will not gain access to the Greenland economy (or) militarily to Greenland.” -- Reuters

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said any decision on joining the Board of Peace led by the U.S. to oversee the Gaza ceasefire plan will be taken after consultations with Moscow's strategic partners.

“Regarding our participation in the ‘Peace Board', the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been instructed to study the documents received by us, consult with our strategic partners on this matter, and only then will we be able to respond to the invitation extended to us,” Mr. Putin said in his televised opening remarks at the national Security Council meeting late Wednesday (January 21, 2026) night.

Putin discusses potential participation in U.S.-led Peace Board for Gaza after consultations, dismisses concerns over Trump's Greenland demand.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis is not in Davos for a picnic, his banker-singer wife Amruta Fadnavis said on Wednesday, responding to remarks by Shiv Sena-UBT MP Sanjay Raut.

Mr. Fadnavis is in Davos to participate in the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting.

“I can never understand his (Raut's) language. But I will only say this much that someone who goes for a picnic does not hold conferences and meetings daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. to bring investment to India and Maharashtra, and boost employment,” Amruta told reporters on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai.

Amruta Fadnavis defends her husband Devendra's WEF trip, dismissing Sanjay Raut's picnic remarks as baseless and unfounded.

The infrastructure to develop and power generative artificial intelligence models will require further “trillions” of dollars in investment, the head of top AI chipmaker Nvidia said Wednesday (January 21, 2026).

Nvidia boss Jensen Huang spoke at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where AI boosterism has been overshadowed by a transatlantic confrontation over US President Donald Trump's desire to annex Greenland.

Nvidia has come to dominate spending on the processors needed for training and operating the large language models (LLMs) behind chatbots like OpenAI's ChatGPT or Google Gemini.

On his second day at the Swiss ski resort, Mr. Trump will seek to promote the “Board of Peace”, his controversial body for resolving international conflicts, with a signing ceremony for the organisation's charter.

The fledgling board boasts a $1 billion price tag for permanent membership and the U.S. President has invited leaders including Russia's Vladimir Putin, Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu and Hungary's Viktor Orban to join.

“I think it's the greatest board ever formed,” Mr. Trump said on Wednesday (January 21, 2026) as he met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, another of the leaders who have agreed to join.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced Wednesday (January 21, 2026) that he was cancelling his planned tariff on U.S. allies in Europe over U.S. control of Greenland after he and the leader of NATO agreed to a framework of a future deal on Arctic security.

The abrupt about-face emerged hours after Mr. Trump had insisted that he wants to “get Greenland, including right, title and ownership,” but said he would not use force to do so while deriding European allies and vowing that NATO should not try to block U.S. expansionism.

Trump cancels Greenland tariff threat, announces NATO's framework for Arctic security, amid geopolitical tensions and territorial disputes.

Trump demands urgent talks on Greenland acquisition, asserting U.S. strength but ruling out military action against Denmark.
