'Won't Allow Any Khan To Become Mayor': Mumbai BJP Chief After Zohran Mamdani's NYC Win
After Zohran Mamdani clinched victory to become New York City's first Muslim and South Asian-origin Mayor, Mumbai BJP chief Ameet Satam made a shocking remark, saying no ‘Khan' would be allowed to become the mayor of the city.
Claiming it an alleged attempt by the Maha Vikas Aghadi to incite ‘vote jihad' in Mumbai, Satam called on people to remain cautious against the politics seen in New York City.
“Just as the colour of some international cities is changing, after seeing the surnames of some mayors and witnessing the Maha Vikas Aghadi's vote jihad, it seems necessary to stay cautious in the context of Mumbai! If someone tries to impose a ‘Khan' on Mumbai, it will not be tolerated! Wake up Mumbaikars," he said on X.
Responding to the Andheri West MLA's remarks, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anand Dubey says, “Ameet Satam's mental state has deteriorated. From the day he became president, he realised he was about to be wiped out. That's why he's been making bizarre statements about the mayor of Mumbai from day one."
His remarks came ahead of the Mumbai civic polls. Satam alleged that some people are adopting the path of appeasement to maintain political power and said anyone trying to divide society by adopting an anti-national stance will be strongly opposed.
Mamdani, the 34-year-old Indian-origin democratic socialist, defeated Andrew Cuomo and Republican nominee Curtis Silwa to become New York's 111th mayor and its first Muslim leader. He said New York was entering “a new era" that demanded “clarity, courage and vision- not excuses."
His campaign has drawn enthusiasm among young and first-time voters, galvanised by his pledges on affordability, rent freezes and immigrant rights. In his victory speech, Mamdani echoed a similar message, declaring New York “a city of immigrants, built by immigrants, powered by immigrants and, as of tonight, led by an immigrant."
Born in Kampala, Uganda, and naturalised as a US citizen in 2018, Mamdani is the son of Indian filmmaker Mira Nair and academic Mahmood Mamdani. His victory is widely seen as the return of progressive politics, despite strong pushback from US President Donald Trump.
Meanwhile, Mumbai is preparing for its high-stakes civic polls soon for control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The outcome will set the tone for the political landscape ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, making it a crucial test for all major parties — the BJP, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), NCP (Ajit Pawar faction), Congress, and Shiv Sena (UBT).
