(Google Trends): Actor-politician Thalapathy Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party in Tamil Nadu with 108 seats but fell short of the majority. Despite Congress's support, TVK needs more 10 MLAs to form the government, while AIADMK's offer of unconditional support was withdrawn due to a lack of response from TVK.
Actor-politician Thalapathy Vijay's party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) made a stunning debut in its first-ever electoral attempt in Tamil Nadu. But the party fell short of a few crucial seats in the 234-seat Tamil Nadu Assembly as his party fell 10 short of the majority mark. With TVK not having the absolute majority, Vijay is unlikely to take an oath and the Governor is apparently not convinced about the numbers so far.

Despite TVK emerging as the single largest party in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly with 108 seats, Vijay won't be able to form the government in Tamil Nadu. The Congress on Wednesday extended full support to TVK for forming the new government in the state, ditching its long-standing alliance with the DMK in Tamil Nadu. However, that is not enough to form the government as the Congress has only 5 MLAs.ALSO READ:
AIADMK moves MLAs to resort
Dissent seems to brewing within the AIADMK as one faction is extending pressing the leadership to support Vijay in forming the government. The newly elected MLAs of the party have been moved to Puducherry, the party said, reported TOI. AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan, speaking to PTI on Wednesday, said that the party MLAs have been lodged in Puducherry.Sources said the AIADMK, headed by Edappadi K Palaniswami, was ready to offer unconditional support to Vijay’s TVK to help it form the government, and talks between the two sides were reportedly in progress. However, after what sources termed a prolonged silence from the TVK camp since Wednesday afternoon, the AIADMK chose to pull back its offer. Party leaders also dismissed any possibility of joining hands with the DMK.
"We offered unconditional support for a stable government. For us, anything was negotiable, provided there was mutual respect. However, there has been no response from TVK since Wednesday noon," said a senior leader, a close associate of Palaniswami told TOI.
"Vijay is unresponsive. He slighted us. There has been no proper response to our voluntary support. So, we called off the talks. Now, we have to keep our flock together and show our political experience," a senior AIADMK leader familiar with the developments was quoted as saying by TOI.
Congress breaks up with DMK
Congress leader Karti Chidambaram announced the party’s “unanimous” decision to support Vijay-led TVK, saying the Congress was backing the actor-politician in forming a secular and stable government in Tamil Nadu. “The Congress party has decided to support a government headed by the TVK,” Chidambaram said."TVK has got 108 seats. The people of Tamil Nadu want a formation to be headed by the TVK. It's now incumbent upon the TVK to put together a workable majority, and they have reached out to the Congress party formally. It has been discussed in all appropriate forums of the party, and unanimously, the Congress party has decided to support a government headed by the TVK because we believe that the people of Tamil Nadu want a change, but they also want a change that is headed by the TVK, but is also a secular formation," the Congress leader said.
DMK calls Congress 'backstabber'
Tensions escalated within the Secular Progressive Alliance after the DMK branded the Congress a “backstabber” amid growing speculation that the grand old party could support TVK in Tamil Nadu. DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the Congress, calling the move “myopic” and accusing the party of “backstabbing” its INDIA bloc allies."I think this is a very short-sighted, myopic stand taken by the Congress, which they will regret. The 2029 big elections are coming, where we were very confident that we would be able to remove the BJP. But now, because of this decision by the Congress, it has made them a very unstable partner. The perception that is out in the entire country is that Congress cannot be trusted," he said.
Majority mark in Tamil Nadu Assembly
In the Tamil Nadu Assembly election, the TVK has won 108 seats, the DMK 59, AIADMK 47, Congress 5, PMK 4, IUML 2, CPI 2, CPI-M 2, and the VCK 2. The BJP, DMDK and AMMK have got 1 seat each. The TVK needs 118 seats to form the government in the state and it has 10 short of a majority. While IUML (2 MLAs) said it would not support TVK, other DMK allies VCK, CPI, CPM (2 MLAs each), and DMDK (1) are yet to commit.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News SourceSource: EconomicTimes
