Will Bihar maintain historic momentum in final phase?

Mark your calendars! Tuesday marks the final showdown of the Bihar assembly elections. The ruling NDA and the Grand Alliance are gearing up for a fierce contest to surpass their previous 2020 outcomes. The NDA is focused on shining in the Magadh-Shahabad area, while the Mahagathbandhan works tirelessly to close the gap in the Tirhut division.
Patna: In the final phase of 2025 Bihar assembly polls to be held on Tuesday, both major players - ruling NDA and Grand Alliance - face a major challenge of repeating their performance in the 2020 elections.
While Magadh and Shahabad regions emerged as a stronghold of the Opposition alliance in the last polls, the Tirhut division helped NDA maintain a good lead. Out of 37 seats, which will go to polls in the Magadh-Shahabad region, the Opposition emerged victorious in 31 seats while NDA could bag only six. NDA could not win a single seat in Shahabad's Rohtas and Kaimur districts. So this time, NDA changed its strategy. The Magadh region, which accommodates five districts of Gaya, Auranagabad, Nawada, Jahanabad and Arwal, sends 26 MLAs to the state assembly.
While BJP has ceded all seven seats to its allies in Rohtas district, the party's three candidates are trying their luck in the neighbouring Kaimur district. Kaimur is the native district of RJD MP from Buxar, Sudhakar Singh. He was elected to the assembly from Ramgarh seat. In the bypoll after Singh vacated Ramgarh, BJP won it. Now, BJP nominee Ashok Singh is in direct contest with RJD's Ajit Singh, Sudhakar's younger brother. Sudhakar' father Jagdanand Singh, who represented this seat for six times, is a senior leader of RJD.
NDA is depending on the popularity of its allies - LJP(RV), RLM and HAM - to improve its performance.
Similarly, the main challenge that the Mahagathbandhan faces in the Tirhut division is to stop NDA from maintaining its lead. Tirhut division's 40 seats are spread in five districts of East Champaran, West Champaran, Sitamarhi, Sheohar and Madhubani. Out of 40 seats here, NDA had bagged 31 while nine were won by the Grand Alliance. This time, the Opposition - RJD, Congress, CPI (ML)(L), VIP, CPI - are contesting 24, 11, 2, 2 and 1 seats, respectively, in this division.
The Bhagalpur region has 16 seats. In 2020, NDA bagged 12 while three seats went in favour of Mahagathbandhan.
The Opposition is desperate to improve its performance in Seemanchal, including Supaul. In 2020, NDA maintained a lead in this region by bagging 17 seats. Mahagathbandhan got only 7 seats while AIMIM won five. Seemanchal's four districts - Purnia, Araria, Kishanganj and Katihar - have a considerable Muslim population. Congress is contesting 12, RJD nine, VIP and CPI (ML)(L) 2 and 1 seats, respectively.
