Film sets across Tamil cinema saw an unexpected pause this weekend, leaving crews waiting and projects suddenly on hold. On May 2, the Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) called for a token strike, bringing shooting schedules to a halt for several ongoing films, including D55 starring Dhanush and Arasan, which features Silambarasan TR. The protest affected film activities between 6 am and 6 pm, disrupting both shoots and post-production work across the industry.
So, what exactly led to this sudden standstill? At the core of the issue is a growing concern among producers about rising costs. According to TFPC, the salaries of leading actors and technicians have increased significantly over the past three years, making it harder for producers to manage budgets and recover investments.
The council has been advocating for a shift in how payments are structured. Instead of fixed upfront fees, producers are pushing for a revenue-sharing model, where actors and technicians would earn based on a film’s performance after release. They believe this could reduce financial pressure and make projects more sustainable in the long run.
Despite multiple rounds of discussions with the Nadigar Sangam, the matter remains unresolved. With no agreement in sight, TFPC went ahead with the token strike to highlight the financial strain being faced by producers.
The council has also pointed out that similar payment models are already being followed in other industries. In Hindi cinema, stars like Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, and Ajay Devgn have adopted profit-sharing deals in certain projects. Similar practices are also seen in parts of the Telugu film industry.
Producers say the stakes are high. A single unsuccessful film can result in heavy losses, and many claim there is limited support from top stars or technicians once a project underperforms. This has made it increasingly difficult for small and mid-scale producers to continue backing new films.
Adding to the tension, TFPC has also raised concerns that some actors are prioritising projects in other industries, while local producers continue to struggle financially.
As part of the strike, film shoots and post-production activities were paused for the day. However, the Nadigar Sangam chose not to participate. The actors’ body expressed regret over the decision and clarified that it does not support strikes that impact the livelihoods of artists. It also noted that its rules do not allow it to direct members to join such protests.
