Why Men Are More Likely To Develop Stomach Cancer: Expert Insights
Stomach cancer affects thousands of people each year. According to various studies, men are at a higher risk than women. Dr Utkarsh Ajgaonkar, Consultant, Surgical Oncology, TGH Onco Life Cancer Centre explains that understanding the reasons behind this difference can help with early detection and prevention, both of which are crucial for saving lives.
“Stomach cancer, also called gastric cancer, occurs when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably in the lining of the stomach," says Dr Ajgaonkar. “It often develops slowly, and symptoms such as indigestion, bloating, nausea, or unexplained weight loss may appear only in later stages making early diagnosis challenging."
Although stomach cancer can affect individuals of any age, studies consistently show that men are more likely than women to develop it. This makes awareness, lifestyle choices, and regular screenings especially important for men.
Why Are Men at Higher Risk?
According to Dr Ajgaonkar, several factors contribute to the higher risk among men.
“Men tend to smoke more, consume alcohol more frequently, and include more processed or smoked foods in their diet, all of which increase the risk of stomach cancer," he explains.
Additionally, occupational exposure plays a role. “Many men work in industries that involve exposure to chemicals, dust, or certain metals, which may further raise their risk," notes Dr Ajgaonkar.
However, he emphasizes that women are not immune. “Even though men are more prone, women can also develop stomach cancer. Everyone must stay alert to symptoms and adopt preventive habits," he adds.
Tips to Prevent Stomach Cancer
Dr Utkarsh Ajgaonkar stresses the importance of prevention through healthy lifestyle choices, “Take charge of your well-being. Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption," he advises.
He further cautions against certain foods and infections that increase risk, “Processed, pickled, and smoked foods should be consumed minimally. Managing Helicobacter pylori infections is also crucial, as they are a known risk factor for stomach cancer," says Dr Ajgaonkar.
Regular check-ups are key. “If you experience persistent stomach discomfort or have a family history of stomach cancer, consult your doctor early. Ignoring symptoms can lead to late-stage detection, which makes treatment more difficult," he adds.

While studies show that men are more prone to stomach cancer, Dr. Utkarsh Ajgaonkar emphasizes that prevention through healthy habits, early detection, and awareness is vital for everyone.
“Awareness saves lives," concludes Dr. Ajgaonkar. “When people understand the risk factors and take proactive steps, stomach cancer can often be prevented or detected at an early, treatable stage. Stay aware, stay healthy, and stay safe."
