A good night's sleep is often spoken about in the context of mood, immunity, and productivity, but its impact on weight and metabolism is far deeper than most people realise. “Poor sleep increases ghrelin and reduces leptin, making us feel hungrier even when the body doesn't need extra calories," he says. His observation is echoed across specialities, with experts agreeing that hormonal imbalance is one of the earliest and strongest metabolic consequences of sleep deprivation.
According to Dr.Vinit Banga, Director-Neurology, Fortis Hospital, Faridabad, “Shortened sleep triggers a surge in ghrelin and a drop in leptin, leading to sharp increases in hunger – especially for carb-heavy, high-calorie foods." This hormonal shift makes appetite harder to control, even for individuals who normally make disciplined choices.
The effects extend beyond hunger cues. Poor sleep also weakens insulin sensitivity, reducing the body's ability to convert glucose into energy. As Dr. Saggu explains, this drives glucose toward fat storage, increasing the risk of belly fat, obesity, and metabolic syndrome.
Functional nutritionist Mugdha Pradhan, CEO & Founder, iThrive, adds another layer: “High cortisol from poor sleep pushes the body into fat-storage mode while disrupting thyroid function and slowing mitochondrial activity." With the body's calorie-burning capacity dialled down, even normal eating habits may begin to lead to weight gain.
For many patients, sleep and weight loss are locked in a loop. “People often say they're doing everything right, but the weight won't budge. Sleep loss sabotages hormonal chemistry and fuels stubborn fat that resists every diet," says Dr. Ashish Gautam, Senior Director – General, Laparoscopic & Robotic Surgery, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj, Delhi. He highlights how excess weight further worsens sleep, especially through snoring or sleep apnea, which then perpetuates metabolic dysfunction.

All four experts agree on a clear takeaway: consistent, high-quality sleep is a metabolic tool, not a luxury. Prioritising 7–9 hours of uninterrupted sleep, keeping a stable sleep schedule, protecting the pre-bed hour from screens and heavy meals, and aligning with circadian rhythms can meaningfully improve hunger control, energy use, and weight regulation.
Sleep acts as the body's nightly metabolic reset, governing hormones, glucose balance, appetite, and fat-burning efficiency. When sleep becomes a daily priority, not an afterthought, the body finally gets the stability it needs to metabolise well, maintain a healthy weight, and support long-term wellbeing.
