Which Country Has The Most Cross-Border Trains? Where Does India Stand?
On September 29, the central government unveiled two ambitious cross-border railway projects that will connect Bhutan to India's railway network for the very first time. Bhutan currently does not have its own railway system, making these the country's inaugural rail connectivity projects.
These initiatives were originally planned two decades ago and aim to link the Himalayan nation with India's vast 70,000-kilometre rail network.
The first line is a 69-kilometre route connecting Kokrajhar in Assam to Gelephu in Bhutan, with an estimated cost of Rs 3,456 crore. The second is a 20-kilometre line linking Banarhat in West Bengal to Samtse in Bhutan, costing approximately Rs 577 crore. The Kokrajhar-Gelephu railway is projected to be completed within four years, while the Banarhat-Samtse line should be finished in three years.
The Siliguri Corridor lies about 70 kilometres from Banarhat and around 220 kilometres from Kokrajhar, situated near the India-China-Bhutan tri-junction — the location of the 2017 Doklam border standoff. With China's growing presence in the region, these rail projects have the potential to reshape connectivity and trade across the Eastern Himalayas.
India, despite having numerous land borders, currently has active rail connections with only a handful of neighbouring countries:
Currently, there are plans to establish rail links to Bhutan and Myanmar, though no services are operational as yet. The proposed line to Myanmar would run from Moreh in Manipur to Kalay in Myanmar.
India does not have any railway connection to China due to geographical challenges posed by the Himalayas as well as political reasons.
Several Asian countries have international rail links, with China leading in terms of the number and frequency of cross-border passenger trains. China has rail connections with at least six neighbouring countries, including Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan, North Korea, Vietnam, and Laos.
Notably, an international passenger train runs from Beijing to Moscow via Mongolia. Additional rail lines extend to Kazakhstan (Urumqi and Almaty/Nur-Sultan), North Korea (Pyongyang), Vietnam (Hanoi to Kunming), and Laos, where a high-speed railway opened in 2021.
Germany boasts the densest rail network in Europe and is connected to nine countries via its rail system: Denmark, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
France follows closely, with rail links to approximately eight countries, including the United Kingdom, Italy, and Spain.

Russia, with its extensive borders, connects by rail to roughly ten countries. However, due to political circumstances, many international rail services have been curtailed or suspended, especially following geopolitical tensions since 2022.
Currently, regular passenger trains from Russia mainly operate to China, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan. Although railway lines exist to North Korea and several European neighbours, passenger services are limited or inactive.
