Leaving Davos: When the conversations end, and the work begins

As Davos concludes, the annual gathering saw world leaders, CEOs, and influential figures convene, fostering discussions on peace and global issues. India's significant participation and a memorable session on football's global impact stood out.
Friday is officially the last day in Davos.
In reality, departures begin much earlier.
By Thursday evening, the Promenade starts thinning out. Suitcases appear in hotel lobbies. Familiar faces are already heading home. Years ago, Davos used to run longer. Over time, delegates themselves pushed for a sharper close—by Friday, exhaustion sets in, decisions have been made, and attention turns back to capitals, boardrooms, and real life.
That said, Friday still has its moments.
There are several thoughtful sessions scheduled, and one of my favourites remains the farewell lunch at the Schatzalp Hotel. You take the funicular up the mountain, the valley opens up beneath you, and Davos briefly slows down. I remember staying back for this lunch two years ago—it was snowing heavily then. This year, there was no snow at all.
And yet, in another sense, it snowed all week.
Snowed in world leaders.
Snowed in CEOs.
Snowed in ideas, energy, urgency.
ET CONTRIBUTORS Session featuring Donald Trump alongside global leaders on Board of Peace.Inside the Congress Centre, the atmosphere was electric. Peace conversations moved forward. The G7 was present. The Global South showed up in full force. India, notably, arrived with its largest-ever participation, visible across panels, pavilions, and corridors. As always, Thursday evening closed with the much-anticipated India reception hosted by CII—excellent food, high energy, and this time a more carefully managed entry that made the evening far more enjoyable.
One standout session for me featured Gianni Infantino, alongside Arsène Wenger, now FIFA's Chief of Global Football Development, and Alessandro Del Piero. At the end, each of the roughly 150 participants was handed the official World Cup ball—passed around, photographed, felt. A small but powerful symbol.

Football, after all, may be the most global institution we have.
Two hundred and eleven countries are members . Forty-eight teams at the next World Cup across Mexico, Canada, and the United States. One hundred and four matches in a month. Seven million tickets to be sold, with more than half a billion requests already recorded. First played in 1930. Someone remarked it reaches more people than the UN—only half in jest. Football changes moods, unites countries, and briefly suspends divisions. Perhaps the greatest celebration of humanity, and certainly its greatest show.
This year also delivered a few surprises. A sudden session featuring Donald Trump alongside global leaders on Board of Peace caught many off guard. So did an appearance by Elon Musk, possibly his first such engagement at Davos, adding to the sense that the programme felt less scripted and more fluid than usual.

Davos, for all its scale, remains a small alpine village of about 10,000 plus residents that, for one week each year, becomes one of the most consequential convening points in the world. The Annual Meeting contributes tens of millions of Swiss francs directly to the local economy, with wider spillovers across Switzerland and Europe. More than the numbers, though, it is the positioning that matters. Davos has evolved into a global economic and political platform rolled into one.
There is, inevitably, renewed talk of moving Davos out of Davos.
I am not sure about this idea. Perhaps I am too emotionally invested. The place matters. The mountains matter. The discipline of walking, waiting, and listening matters. That said, complementary formats make sense. A “summer Davos” already exists in China. Similar convenings in the US, Asia, or back home in India would add value. Expansion works. Replacement, I am less convinced.

As I head back now, my thoughts turn homeward—to Delhi—and to a familiar concern: pollution. The contrast between the clean, crisp air of Davos and the realities of our cities is stark. As Gita Gopinath observed during the week, India's growth story will ultimately depend not just on GDP, but on liveable cities, clean air, and quality of life. Global leadership demands attention to these fundamentals.
Heading to Zurich now. The traffic is moving, but still back-to-back—Davos letting go slowly, as it always does. The weather is beautiful, the skies clear, and the mountains calm again. It feels like the right moment to decompress after an intense week—to leave the noise behind, carry the conversations forward, and begin the quieter work that follows Davos.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
