When Should You Stop Fasting? Key Warning Signs You Must Not Ignore
Fasting can offer several health benefits, but knowing when to stop is just as important as knowing when to start. “People can gain health benefits from fasting, but they must understand both the right time to begin and the right time to end it," says Dr. Sameer Bhati, Public Health Analyst.
The body sends clear signals when it needs nourishment. Ignoring these cues can do more harm than good. “If you experience continuous dizziness, weakness, headaches, or difficulty concentrating, it’s a sign that your body may be under stress," explains Dr Bhati. These symptoms can indicate that blood sugar levels are dropping and energy reserves are running low.
Other warning signs include nausea, excessive fatigue, and irritability. “These symptoms often suggest that glycogen stores are depleting and electrolyte balance may be shifting," says Dr Bhati. While severe low blood sugar is uncommon in otherwise healthy individuals, these signs should never be ignored.
Certain individuals need to be particularly cautious. “Fasting should always be medically supervised for people with diabetes, hormonal disorders, or a history of eating disorders," advises Dr Bhati. Even mild symptoms should not be dismissed.
Hydration also plays a critical role during fasting. “If signs of dehydration persist despite adequate fluid intake, it is important to break the fast," he adds. Prolonged or unstructured fasting without proper guidance can lead to nutrient deficiencies and metabolic imbalances.
That said, not all fasting carries the same risk. “Structured approaches like intermittent fasting, such as the 16:8 method or occasional 24-hour fasts are generally safer when done correctly and with proper hydration," notes Dr. Sameer Bhati.
Ultimately, fasting is meant to support health not test physical limits. “The moment your body shifts from adapting to distress is when you should stop fasting," he emphasises. Listening to your body, rather than strictly following a schedule, is key to achieving safe and sustainable results.
