A video of Red Bull India's iconic Red Bull Speed Link event from 2009 resurfaced recently. In the clip, Formula 1 driver David Coulthard raced a Red Bull F1 on the then newly built Bandra-Worli Sea Link road. As Red Bull invited the seasoned F1 driver for the event, Coulthard provided a stunning demonstration of the vehicle and its heart-pounding roar on the suitable asphalt and sweeping curves of the Sea Link.
Now, it is being claimed that Coulthard's exhilarating show of power and speed of F1 engine cars resulted in a breach of the state road authorities' regulations. According to reports, Coulthard hit a speed of 265 km/h with his Red Bull F1 engine car, which surpassed the 100 km/h limit set by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and earned Red Bull a huge fine.
Red Bull India Fined
The local state authorities reportedly imposed on the organisers of the Red Bull Speed Link a fine of Rs 14 lakh for the breach observed by Coulthard. For the exciting show organised on October 11, 2009, Red Bull India is understood to have initially paid Rs 35 lakh in total to the MSRDC officials.
While Rs 21 lakh of these were paid as compensation for the whole day's toll collection as the entire elevated bridge was booked by the brand, the remaining Rs 14 lakh were deposited to cover any accident or damage to the property.
As Coulthard rushed his F1 car on the Bandra-Worli Sea Link at a shocking speed of 265 km/h, nearly three times the limit set by the officials, the organisers had to pay the fine of Rs 14 lakh to MSRDC.
Event Hosted Months After Sea Link Was Opened
The fine was issued against the organisers even as Coulthard's demonstration of F1 engine cars was a fantastic exhibition of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, which was only a few months into its launch back when the Red Bull's event was held.
Acknowledged today as an architectural marvel in Mumbai's rapid urban development, the Bandra-Worli Sea Link is an eight-lane bridge, spanning over five kilometres and connecting the western suburbs of Bandra to Worli in South Mumbai.
