When pieces align: How small contributions shaped India’s win over the West Indies

India's T20 World Cup journey showcases the power of collective effort. While star players shine, crucial contributions from all-rounders and vital small partnerships are key. These efforts ensure victories, even when individual performances dominate headlines. This approach makes India a formidable opponent.
Team spirit, said Spurs striker Steve Archibald, is an illusion glimpsed in the aftermath of victory. This much-tossed around quote often makes sense, for some of the most successful sporting teams in history have had players who wouldn’t say a word to each other. Yet, there are rare moments in which you can see a team coming together.
In this men’s T20 World Cup, India began as a formidably scary unit that had no cracks. And then, as the difference between bilateral series and tournament matchplay revealed itself, this suddenly became a group of characters who were not quite coming together as one. They could not stitch together that one complete performance despite winning all four matches in the first round.
But the problem was not so much with the team as the wider sporting world’s understanding of what constitutes teamwork. In some instances, individuals dominated proceedings, and the distribution of contributions was rarely equitable.
When you look at the numbers in India’s win against the West Indies, it again looks as though a special few were carrying the burden of many. Jasprit Bumrah was the man Suryakumar Yadav turned to when he needed a wicket, or even when he needed to come back from an over in which the West Indies ran away with the game.
But, while Bumrah relishes that role and is better at it than anyone else in the world, he was far from alone. Gautam Gambhir explained this well in the aftermath. “Bowling against these guys on this kind of a wicket, your fifth bowler, actually, can always be under pressure,” said Gambhir. “Hardik [Pandya] and Axar [Patel] I thought, controlled the game for us because those eight overs were very crucial.”
If India’s bowling was only as good as its weakest link, then Hardik and Axar certainly did a job. They conceded a combined 75 between them, but bowled a lot of their overs when West Indies had wickets in hand and the full license to attack. Typically, India expect Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Varun Chakravarthy to deliver on their primary skills. But the manner in which the allrounders chip in makes a world of difference.
In the batting card, the contrast was even starker. Sanju Samson made 97 of the 196 runs India needed. While his innings was of the highest quality and all the more special because he stayed till the end and ensured the job was done, he had help at crucial moments.
“That partnership between Sanju and Surya obviously settled the nerves, said Gambhir. “Those small partnerships can play a massive role and someone had to break the game. So, Tilak [Varma] broke the game open for us in the middle with that cameo.”
Tilak moved from the No. 3 position he was habituated to, floating at No. 6 and No. 5 in different games, but brought the same intent to his play. This allowed Sanju to not have to look at the required run rate or feel the pressure of the scoreboard. And then there was Shivam Dube, who faced only four balls but smacked two of those to the boundary. This ensured that the final over was set up for Samson to merely seal the deal rather than have to pull a rabbit out of the hat. “I think Shivam’s two boundaries are as important as Sanju’s 97, because if he hadn’t hit those two boundaries, we probably wouldn’t be sitting here talking about the 97,” said Gambhir.
The fact is that if India had not got over the line, the narrative around Sanju’s innings would have been a different one. “Those small contributions actually help you win games. The big contribution makes headlines.” Gambhir insisted that he didn’t “believe in data” and that it was “overrated.”
But he can only take this position because others in the system know what the data tells them and can make it accessible to the players. Gambhir also said he didn’t believe in fixed batting positions, but he qualified that. “We’re very fortunate that we’ve got world-class players who we can use differently, because not many teams have that luxury,” he said, referring to the variety in the bowling attack coupled with the skill to bowl at any stage of the innings. “From the batting point of view, we’ve got power. And then you’re never away from the chase.” It’s true that India have all of this. And now, when it comes together in a manner where it is evident that getting the job done, one day at a time, is the only aim of the collective, they become a very difficult team to beat.
