When is Maha Shivratri 2026? Find out the date and auspicious timings
The sacred festival of Maha Shivratri is observed every year on the 14th day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Phalgun. The day is dedicated to worshipping Lord Shiva, and devotees observe a fast. During the festival, the Shiva Linga is ceremonially made an offering of jal (water), milk, and other sacred offerings.
Traditional rituals such as Rudrabhishek are performed by devotees, on Maha Shivaratri. The festival is also thought to lessen the impact of planetary doshas (flaws) in one's horoscope. Sometimes referred to as Phalgun Masik Shivaratri, it carries spiritual significance.
“Among all the twelve Shivratris that occur in a calendar year, Mahashivratri, the one that occurs in February-March is of the most spiritual significance. On this night, the northern hemisphere of the planet is positioned in such a way that there is a natural upsurge of energy in a human being,” states Isha Foundation.
This year, Maha Shivaratri will be celebrated on Sunday, 15 February 2026.

Maha Shivaratri is regarded as one of the most sacred festivals in Hinduism. Numerous legends and beliefs are associated with it. One tradition holds that on this night, Lord Shiva performed the Tandava for the welfare of the universe. Another belief is that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were married on this auspicious day. As a result, the festival is seen as a symbol of the divine union of Shiva and Shakti, and special worship is offered to both deities.
“Mahashivratri is very significant for people who are on the spiritual path. It is also very significant for people who are in family situations, and also for the ambitious in the world. People who live in family situations observe Mahashivratri as Shiva's wedding anniversary. Those with worldly ambitions see that day as the day Shiva conquered all his enemies,” states Isha Foundation.
Observing the fast and performing the prescribed rituals, including Rudrabhishek, is said to bring positive energy into one's life. It is believed to help fulfil wishes as well as maintain happiness and peace in family and marital life. Devotees also hold that sincere worship on Maha Shivaratri pleases Lord Shiva, who blesses them by removing difficulties and bestowing happiness, prosperity, and overall wellbeing.
