When Fatima Sana Sheikh Spoke About Bulimia, Shining Light On Eating Disorders And Mental Health
Eating disorders are often misunderstood, reduced to conversations about food, weight, or appearance. But for those experiencing them, the struggle runs far deeper rooted in emotional pain, stress, and a fractured relationship with self-worth. Fatima Sana Sheikh recently spoke openly about bulimia and eating disorders, helping bring much-needed attention to an issue that is still widely stigmatised.
“Bulimia and other eating disorders are not simply about food, they often reflect deeper emotional struggles, stress, or difficulties with self-image. Individuals may use food and overeat to deal with stress and overwhelming feelings. Recognizing the signs early, approaching the person with empathy rather than judgment, and seeking professional guidance are critical steps. With the right support, therapy, and understanding, recovery is possible, and individuals can regain both their physical health and emotional well-being," says Dr Rituparna Ghosh, Sr. Consultant Psychologist, Apollo Hospitals. Navi Mumbai.
Dr Ghosh highlights an essential truth: eating disorders are not lifestyle choices or phases, they are serious mental health conditions that require compassion, awareness, and timely intervention.
The Mental Health Link Behind Eating Disorders
Bulimia nervosa, along with other eating disorders, is often closely linked to anxiety, depression, trauma, perfectionism, and low self-esteem. Many individuals turn to disordered eating patterns as a coping mechanism, an attempt to regain control during emotionally overwhelming periods.
According to mental health experts, these conditions frequently coexist with chronic stress and unresolved emotional conflicts. Social pressures, unrealistic beauty standards, and constant comparison especially in the age of social media can further intensify feelings of inadequacy and self-criticism.
Why Early Recognition Matters
One of the biggest challenges with eating disorders is that they often remain hidden. People struggling may appear “functional" on the outside, while quietly dealing with guilt, shame, and physical exhaustion. Changes in eating behaviour, frequent binge–purge cycles, obsession with body image, or extreme emotional distress around food are signs that should not be ignored.
Speaking on the importance of early support, Dr Ayesha Malhotra, Consultant Psychiatrist, explains, “Eating disorders are complex mental health conditions, not habits that can be ‘fixed' with willpower. Early intervention significantly improves recovery outcomes. When individuals are met with empathy instead of judgement, they are far more likely to seek help and respond positively to therapy."
Recovery Is Possible with the Right Support
Both Fatima's perspective and medical experts agree on one crucial point: recovery is achievable. Treatment often involves a multidisciplinary approach, combining psychological therapy, nutritional counselling, and medical monitoring. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), trauma-informed care, and family support play a vital role in long-term healing.
Dr. Malhotra adds, “Recovery is not just about normalising eating patterns, it's about rebuilding a healthier relationship with oneself. With professional guidance and a strong support system, individuals can regain emotional balance and physical health."

By speaking openly, public figures like Fatima Sana Sheikh help dismantle stigma and encourage honest conversations around mental health. Eating disorders thrive in silence but awareness, empathy, and understanding can create pathways to healing.
If someone you know is struggling, listening without judgement and encouraging professional help can make a life-changing difference. Because mental health, like physical health, deserves care, patience, and compassion.
