WhatsApp Users Get Critical Security Alert From Indian Govt: What You Should Know

WhatsApp users have been warned about the major security risk that affects billions of users relying on the messaging app to send chats, images and more. The alert from the security agency of the Indian government mentions that if hackers exploit the issues they can bypass the device security to cause havoc.

WhatsApp is popular and used by many across the globe but it also makes it extremely appealing to bad actors who are waiting to pounce on a serious vulnerability with the platform. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team or CERT-In has been alerted about such a threat and is warning everyone about its risks.

WhatsApp Security Threat

The security issue with WhatsApp has been targeted at Apple users, both iPhones and Mac versions. “This vulnerability exists in WhatsApp due to incomplete validation of rich response messages. An attacker could exploit this flaw to trigger processing of content from an arbitrary URL on a victim's device," as given in the CERT-In security bulletin.

WhatsApp has issued its own security details with regards to the November update. “Incomplete validation of rich response messages in WhatsApp for iOS prior to v2.25.23.73, WhatsApp Business for iOS v2.25.23.82, and WhatsApp for Mac v2.25.23.83 could have allowed a user to trigger processing of media content from an arbitrary URL on another user's device," the platform says in a post.

It does seem the vulnerabilities are centered towards Apple devices but WhatsApp claims these issues have not been exploited and it has seen no evidence around it.

WhatsApp Versions Affected

If you have WhatsApp on any of these platforms and running on the versions prior to these, you need to be alert about possible actions.

It goes without saying that you should install the latest WhatsApp version for your iOS or Mac device right away.
