What Are The Most Common Types Of Arthritis? Ways To Slow Down Its Progression
Arthritis is a broad term that refers to inflammation of the joints, often resulting in pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced mobility. There are over 100 different types of arthritis. The most common form is osteoarthritis, typically seen in older adults. It is also known as wear-and-tear arthritis or degenerative arthritis.
Another major category includes Autoimmune Rheumatic Diseases (AIRDs), where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own tissues. Common AIRDs include Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Psoriatic Arthritis, and Spondyloarthritis.
Dr. Rajiv Ranjan Kumar, Consultant Rheumatologist, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, shares all you need to know:
Most Common Types of Arthritis
1. Osteoarthritis (OA):
The most prevalent form of arthritis, osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage that cushions the ends of bones in a joint gradually deteriorates, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced flexibility. OA typically affects weight-bearing joints such as the hips, knees, and spine, but may also involve the hands. Age, joint injury, and obesity are key risk factors.
2. Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA):
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the lining of the joints (synovium), causing inflammation. Over time, this can lead to cartilage and bone damage. RA often affects joints symmetrically (on both sides of the body) and may cause systemic symptoms such as fatigue, fever, and organ involvement.
3. Gout:
Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis caused by the deposition of uric acid crystals in the joints—most commonly in the big toe. It leads to sudden, severe pain, redness, and swelling. Diet and genetics play significant roles in its development.
4. Psoriatic Arthritis:
Linked with psoriasis (a skin condition), psoriatic arthritis can cause rapid joint destruction if not treated promptly by a rheumatologist.
5. Ankylosing Spondylitis:
This type primarily affects the spine and lower limb joints and is often seen in young individuals under 40 years of age.
6. Connective Tissue Disease (CTD)-Related Arthritis:
This includes arthritis associated with autoimmune conditions such as Lupus (SLE), Mixed Connective Tissue Disease (MCTD), Sjögren's Syndrome, and Scleroderma.
Ways to Slow Down Arthritis Progression
Maintain a Healthy Weight:
Excess body weight increases stress on weight-bearing joints such as the knees and hips. Losing even a few kilograms can significantly reduce joint pain and slow cartilage degeneration.
Exercise Regularly:
Engage in low-impact activities like walking, swimming, and yoga. These strengthen the muscles around joints, improve flexibility, and reduce stiffness. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week.
Control Blood Sugar:
High blood sugar accelerates the formation of molecules that make cartilage stiffer and more prone to damage. Diabetes also promotes systemic inflammation that contributes to joint degeneration. Studies show that over half of people with diabetes also suffer from arthritis.
Protect Your Joints:
Use ergonomic tools, wear supportive footwear, and avoid repetitive joint stress. Assistive devices can help reduce strain on affected joints.
Stay Informed and Proactive:
Regular check-ups, early diagnosis, and adherence to treatment plans are essential for managing symptoms and preventing further joint damage.
Early Detection Matters
Recognizing early symptoms such as joint pain, stiffness, or swelling and seeking timely medical advice is crucial. Consulting a rheumatologist can ensure accurate diagnosis, individualized treatment, and effective long-term management.
Don't wait until the pain becomes severe, early medical intervention can make all the difference in preserving joint function and maintaining a healthy quality of life.
