'We Decided To...': Konkona Sen Sharma Reveals Why Son Haroon Uses Ex-Husband Ranvir Shorey’s Surname

Konkona Sen Sharma is one of the most loved actresses in Bollywood, and while her professional life often makes headlines with her signing interesting projects every now and then, her personal life too gains enough attention even though she often takes breaks from the limelight.

Now, in a new chat, Konkona Sen Sharma, who has taken both her parents' surnames in her name, talked about how she chose whether her son would take her long name or go with ex-husband Ranvir Shorey's surname.

Konkona, in conversation with Mid-day, opened up about how her parents, Aparna Sen and Mukul Sharma, gave her a chance to pick and choose her surname. She decided to keep them both and said, “I was probably 4 or 5 when they asked me, ‘Do you want to be Konkona Sen or Konkona Sharma?' I thought, why not have both? I felt like if I picked one, either of my parents would feel bad. And then I had to live with this long name for the rest of my life. My college career, my entire school career — they would mispronounce my name. It has been quite a journey."

She also talked about how she had an independent upbringing and shared, “I do use Sen Sharma as one word now, as it is easier and quicker. That is the thing about my parents and grandparents — they were very cool, they never infantilised me, and they treated me like a sovereign identity of my own."

While Konkona uses both her parents' last names as hers, that's not the case with her son. Speaking of how she decided to keep Shorey as her son's last name, the actress shared, “We decided just to stick with Shorey. It didn't make sense to me. If I do Sen Sharma, it isn't my mom's maiden name. And if they wanted to take on the last name of the spouse, the name wouldn't end. Having done that to myself, I asked him if he could add a middle name if he wants later, but till then, let's just keep Haroon Shorey."

About Konkona Sen Sharma

Konkona Sen Sharma was earlier married to Ranvir Shorey. The two tied the knot in 2010 but went their separate ways five years later. Their divorce was finalised in 2020. The two share a son, Haroon, and continue to co-parent. The actress was last seen in the crime thriller Search: The Naina Murder Case. The series was released on JioHotstar on October 10.

Before that, she starred in Metro… In Dino, a multi-starrer that brings together names like Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Pankaj Tripathi, Neena Gupta, and Anupam Kher.
