Viswanathan Anand Ends Six-Year Break To Face D Gukesh In Blockbuster Showdown
In an eagerly anticipated showdown, five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand will return to competitive chess after six years to compete against reigning world champion D Gukesh and other former protégés at the seventh Tata Steel Chess from January 7 to 11. Anand, who last participated in this tournament in 2019, will face a new generation of Indian chess stars, notably Gukesh, whom he has mentored at his WestBridge Anand Chess Academy.
This event marks the first individual tournament on Indian soil where the two world champions will meet. The Tata Steel Chess India, taking place at the Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium, will feature both Open and Women's sections in rapid and blitz formats, offering equal prize money for both categories.
The Open section includes notable participants such as FIDE World Cup runner-up Wei Yi, former US champion Wesley So, Hans Niemann, Volodar Murzin, along with a strong Indian contingent featuring R Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi, supported by WACA. Other Indian players in the field include Vidit Gujrathi, Aravindh Chithambaram, Divya Deshmukh, Vaishali R, Vantika Agrawal, and Rakshitta Ravi.
The women's event will be led by World Cup winner Divya, alongside former world championship challenger Aleksandra Goryachkina, Kateryna Lagno, Nana Dzagnidze, D Harika, and Carissa Yip.
Expressing his excitement about returning as a player, Anand stated that the chess world has transformed significantly with the rise of talented players, especially in India. He is eager to face the young chess prodigies in this prominent Indian tournament.

D B Sundara Ramam, vice president (corporate services) at Tata Steel, highlighted that Anand's return brings a special dimension to the event. Tournament Director Dibyendu Barua noted that the tournament has become one of the premier global chess events, emphasising that Anand facing his students and protégés symbolises the passing of the torch in Indian chess.
