Indian superstars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have suddenly disappeared from the the ICC ODI batting rankings, triggering retirement rumours on social media on Wednesday.
However, this was a glitch from ICC's side, which was fixed not long after with the legends finding themselves back in the Top 10, putting rest to any rumours about their retirements. This comes only days after Sharma was ranked were ranked No. 2 with 756 points and Kohli was placed at No. 4 with 736 points, having held spots in the top 10 for a long time.
Interestingly, Pakistan's Babar Azam, who had slipped to third in last week's rankings with Rohit taking over the second place, was moved to second, just behind beneath top-ranked Shubman Gill. Following the correction, though, Azam returned to No. 3.
Several fans noticed the the two batters were not even in the top 100 in the rankings list, speculating major concern, especially when the two are in the last legs of their careers.
Neither Sharma nor Kohli has played any cricket since IPL 2025. Their last appearance for India was in the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand in March.
Do players disappear from the ICC Rankings?
Players are removed from the ICC rankings if they have not played a match within the qualifying period, which is 12-15 months for Tests and 9-12 months for ODIs and T20Is.A player can be removed from the rankings if they retire from a format or completely from international cricket. For example, when MS Dhoni retired from Tests in 2014, he was removed from the Test rankings, but remained in the ODI rankings.
Both Kohli and Sharma are not in the Test and T20I rankings as they have hung their boots in the two formats. Both retired from the shortest format after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup and from Tests in May this year.
