Viral AI Trends Like Nano Banana And Vintage Saree Edits Look Cool, But Are Your Photos Safe?
Following ChatGPT's Ghibli-style images, the Internet has now found its latest obsession with artificial intelligence (AI). If you have scrolled through your social media accounts recently, chances are high that you came across the newest trend, known as the Nano Banana, or might have stumbled upon the viral vintage saree AI edits. Haven't you?
The Nano Banana trend comes from Google's Gemini Nano AI tool. With the help of it, people turn their regular pictures into 3D figurine-style portraits with glossy skin and cartoonish looks. And once people began experimenting with the tool, it led to the creation of vintage saree portraits. A major section of women turned their pictures into elegant, retro-style images with cinematic or traditional saree looks. And with such viral trends popping up now and then, the question remains: Are your images safe?
Is Google's Gemini Nano AI Tool Safe?
Tech companies like Google and OpenAI do provide tools to help protect the content you share. However, ultimately, the safety of your images depends on your safety practices and the intent of those who have access to your information. As for Google's Nano Banana images, they come with an invisible digital watermark, known as SynthIDs and metadata tags, which indicate that these pictures are AI-generated.
According to information on aistudio.google.com, “All images created or edited with Gemini 2.5 Flash Image include an invisible SynthID digital watermark to clearly identify them as AI-generated. Build with confidence and provide transparency for your users." While there are always concerns that AI-generated images can look too realistic and be used for deepfakes, the SynthID watermark, although not visible to the naked eye, will indicate that those pictures were created using AI when checked through specific tools. Such watermarks can help verify the origin of an image.
But there's one problem. The detection is not available to everyone. So, even if a SynthID watermark is present, most people won't be able to verify whether the images are AI-generated or not. Experts have also expressed their concerns, stating that watermarks aren't foolproof because they can be faked or removed. So, what do we do then?
Tips To Keep Your Images Safe
Think twice before uploading your pictures, because you don't know what AI tools are capable of. Never share private or sensitive images.
Before sharing your images, ensure that you remove metadata, such as location tags and device information, to avoid unintended leaks.
Always check your privacy settings on AI tools and social media platforms before sharing your pictures to prevent them from being misused.
Save your original images and prompts to notice changes or misuse.
Check if uploading your image grants the platform the right to use it for model training.
