Fillmmaker Vikram Bhatt and his wife Shwetambari Bhatt have been arrested by Rajasthan Police in connection with a Rs 30 crore fraud case. The case involves Dr Ajay Murdia, the owner of Udaipur's Indira Group of Companies. The complaint filed by Indira IVF founder Dr Ajay Murdia accused Vikram Bhatt and his associates of financial wrongdoing and false promises of making a biopic of his late wife.
Popular filmmaker Vikram Bhatt and his wife were arrested in a Rs 30 crore cheating case registered in Rajasthan last month, PTI reported citing an official. The couple was taken into custody after a complaint was filed by an Udaipur-based doctor, who alleged that he was defrauded of crores. Bhatt, his wife Shwetambari Bhatt, and six others have been accused of Udaipur-based Dr Ajay Murdia, founder of Indira Group of Companies, of Rs 30 crore.

Dr Ajay Murdia filed a complaint a month ago that Vikram Bhatt and his wife lured him to invest over Rs 30 crore to make a biopic on his late wife. He alleged that he was promised high earnings but nothing was materialised. "Murdia, owner of Indira IVF Hospital, wanted to make a biopic on his late wife.He has alleged that he was promised earnings of Rs 200 crore. But nothing materialised, after which Murdia approached Bhopalpura police station in Udaipur, where an FIR was registered for cheating and other offences," the official told PTI. Murdia, who runs a business across India in the field of female infertility, alleged that Vikram Bhatt and other accused duped him by inducements and false assurances of huge profits from film production.

What are the charges against Vikram Bhatt, his wife?
Police's preliminary investigation shows that Dr Ajay Murdia was introduced to the accused through an acquaintance who proposed making a biopic on his late wife. Officers said an agreement was then drafted in May 2024 between Murdia and the Bhatts to produce four films, including the biopic, with the deal valued at Rs 47 crore. Police said the first two projects were completed, but the remaining films were never made.According to the Udaipur police probe, the accused prepared fake documents — including bills issued in the names of non-existent vendors — to cheat the complainant of large sums of money. Police said the accused planned to deceive the complainant by generating fake bills, inflating vouchers and salary records, and validating them as genuine. They allegedly siphoned off around Rs 30 crore from Murdia, according to PTI report.

Sources told TOI that an Udaipur police team coordinated with the Mumbai police and arrested the couple from the residence of Bhatt's sister in Andheri. They were produced before a holiday magistrate in Mumbai. After their production in court, Rajasthan Police sought a two-day transit remand to take the accused from Mumbai to Udaipur by road for further questioning and legal procedures.
"The Udaipur team came with an arrest warrant. The magistrate permitted the police to take them to Rajasthan on two days' transit remand," a Mumbai police officer Udaipur SP Yogesh Goyal told TOI they would be brought to the city.

Vikram Bhatt responds
Vikram Bhatt has denied the allegations and claimed that the police were "misguided". Last week, Udaipur police had issued a lookout notice for Bhatt and his wife. Their daughter Krishna Bhatt is also named in the FIR.(With inputs from TOI and PTI)
