Vijay To Take Oath As Tamil Nadu CM Today, 10 Ministers Including Congress Leaders In Cabinet
Vijay is set to take oath as Tamil Nadu CM on Sunday in Chennai, becoming the first leader outside the DMK-AIADMK formations to head the state government since 1967.
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C Joseph Vijay is set to take oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday at Chennai’s Nehru Stadium, marking a historic political transition in the state as the first leader outside the DMK and AIADMK formations to head the government since 1967.
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for 10 am after Governor Rajendra Arlekar formally invited Vijay to form the ministry and directed him to seek a vote of confidence on or before May 13.
According to details shared from party and alliance sources, nine ministers are expected to take the oath along with Vijay.
Six ministers are likely to be from the TVK, while the Congress, which extended support to the Vijay-led coalition, is expected to get three berths in the cabinet.
The nine ministers who are expected to take the oath with Vijay are:
Congress is also expected to be part of the government with three ministers, though names from the party had not been officially announced at the time of reporting.
HISTORIC OATH CEREMONY IN CHENNAI
The Governor’s office, in an official press release issued from Lok Bhavan on May 9, confirmed Vijay’s appointment after he submitted letters of support from the Congress, Communist Party of India (CPI), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).
“Thiru C. Joseph Vijay, called on the Hon’ble Governor of Tamil Nadu today at Lok Bhavan and submitted a letter informing about his election as the leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam Legislature party,” the release said.
It added that the Governor had appointed Vijay as Chief Minister and invited him to form the ministry.
ANI reported that Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, is expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony in Chennai.
TVK CROSSES MAJORITY MARK
The Vijay-led TVK emerged as the single largest force in the Assembly elections, winning 108 seats in its electoral debut.
However, the party initially fell short of the majority mark of 118 in the 234-member Assembly.
Subsequently, Vijay secured support from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML, taking the coalition’s tally to 120 MLAs.
News agency PTI reported that the final push came after VCK and IUML extended “unconditional support” to the TVK-led arrangement after days of intense political negotiations.
While Congress is expected to participate in the government, PTI reported that parties such as VCK are likely to extend outside support and may not join the cabinet despite backing Vijay’s government.
VIJAY’S POLITICAL RISE
Vijay’s rise marked the end of the “legacy Dravidian duopoly” in Tamil Nadu politics.
The actor-turned-politician, often referred to by supporters as “Thalapathy,” campaigned on promises of change and positioned himself as an alternative to the traditional DMK-AIADMK political structure.
The reports noted that Vijay embraced Dravidian politics while also invoking leaders such as Periyar, CN Annadurai, K Kamaraj and BR Ambedkar in articulating his party’s ideological framework centred on social justice.
Though TVK was formally launched only in 2024, speculation over Vijay’s political entry had persisted for years due to his public outreach and social work initiatives.
His political messaging during the campaign focused on corruption, governance and welfare issues.
ALLIANCE POLITICS AND CELEBRATIONS
TVK workers celebrated the Governor’s decision by bursting firecrackers and distributing sweets outside party offices.
The dramatic government formation process also saw intense negotiations and allegations from rival camps, including accusations of horse-trading by NDA constituent AMMK, which TVK denied.
Congress MP Manickam Tagore congratulated Vijay and said Tamil Nadu was looking toward “change and new hope.” Vijay’s father, filmmaker SA Chandrasekhar, also expressed happiness over the development and said, “Finally, Tamil people have succeeded through Vijay,” according to ANI.
Vijay, who won from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East constituencies, will eventually have to vacate one seat after assuming office.
