As the Pongal festival approaches, Tamil cinema is heading towards one of its most intense clashes in recent years. Two major films, Jana Nayagan starring Thalapathy Vijay and Parasakthi featuring Sivakarthikeyan, are set to release within a day of each other.
Jana Nayagan will hit theatres on January 9, 2026, followed by Parasakthi on January 10. The close timing has sparked excitement, debate and tension across the industry and among fans.
On the surface, it is a typical Pongal box office contest. In reality, it feels like a rehearsal for politics. Vijay's film arrives first, while Parasakthi, produced by a member of the DMK's first family, follows a day later after its release date was advanced from January 14. In this narrow gap, cinema and politics merge, turning a festival weekend into a public statement.
Jana Nayagan is being promoted as Vijay's final screen appearance before he enters politics full-time with his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. The announcement of the Pongal release was made online with poetic lines, quickly matched by fan reactions calling it his “last raid" at the box office.
The trailer, released on January 3, leaves little room for doubt. Vijay's character, sharing initials with his party, is portrayed as a leader and protector. When a child asks if he is a superhero, he replies that he is an ordinary man whose actions are seen as special. The trailer ends with a clear promise: “I am coming."
Parasakthi, directed by Sudha Kongara, stars Sivakarthikeyan and is produced by Aakash Baskaran, who is linked by marriage to the DMK's first family. According to IMDB, the film is based on true events and focuses on the Anti-Hindi Imposition agitations of 1965.
The trailer shows a law enforcing Hindi as the sole national language, triggering protests. It clearly says the protest is against forcing the language, not against the language itself or the people who speak it. Annadurai appears briefly, grounding the film in political history.
Parasakthi was originally planned for a Diwali 2025 release. When Jana Nayagan was expected around the same time, the makers shifted to Pongal. Later, Vijay's film also locked the Pongal slot, leading Parasakthi to advance its date further.
With just days to go, Jana Nayagan is still awaiting its censor certificate. Social media is filled with comparisons, especially after the release date change. The debate has been fuelled further as Parasakthi is produced by Stalin's kin and distributed by Udhayanidhi Stalin's son, Inban Udhay.
The rivalry has spilled beyond cinema halls. Posters of Parasakthi were torn down during a Jana Nayagan trailer screening in Madurai, with Vijay fans being blamed. In Chennai, chants linked to Vijay's party disrupted a Parasakthi audio launch.

Despite the tension, theatre owners have tried to strike a balance. Jana Nayagan is expected to open in 500 to 600 screens, while Parasakthi may release in 400 to 450, out of a total of 1,200 screens across Tamil Nadu.
As Pongal nears, Tamil Nadu prepares for a clash where cinema, fandom and politics come together, making this festive season one of the most closely watched in years.
