Indian Railways is gearing up to introduce a new sleeper version of the Vande Bharat Express. Developed by BEML (Bharat Earth Movers Limited) using ICF (Integral Coach Factory) technology, the train is designed to make long-distance journeys convenient and relaxing. Ahead of its official launch, the indigenously manufactured Vande Bharat sleeper train has achieved a new milestone.

In a viral clip, the sleeper train has clocked a top speed of 180 kilometres per hour (KPH) during its recent trial run. The clip also showcased the train's remarkable stability with three glasses of water.

Despite running at a constant speed of 180 kmph, the water-filled glasses placed on the dashboard remained perfectly still. Not even a drop of water spilled out of the glasses.

Social Media Reaction On Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Water Test

The video sparked a flurry of online discussions. While some said that trains run at slower speeds in reality, others raised safety concerns, asking whether the train could brake effectively at such high speeds and how passenger safety would be ensured during emergencies.

“Would they actually be able to run at this speed with passengers and multiple stops?" questioned a user.

Another said, “Now, railways need to work quickly to make this speed the norm, rather than just showcasing it as a trial… Because in reality, Vande Bharat's average speed is only around 80 km/h."

“Can this train brake effectively at that speed??? In case of emergency braking, will passengers not fastened by seat belts be affected in any way?" asked another.

An individual stated, “Vande Bharat trains run at slower speeds than the Shatabdi trains introduced over 30 years ago."

“They tested at 180 kmph in which country?" asked a user.

“That's only in trials to show the world. They will never run at those speeds when they start operating for normal Indian passengers," said a user.

Vande Bharat Sleeper Train: Launch Date

Originally scheduled for launch in October 2025, the sleeper version's rollout has been delayed due to design and safety issues. A senior North Western Railway official told PTI the first maintenance facility for the Vande Bharat Sleeper will be operational by mid-2026 in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

The Railway Board cited, “There are issues related to furnishing and workmanship at many places in respect of sharp edges and corners at the berthing area, window curtain handles, and pigeon pockets between berth connectors, inviting cleaning issues."

Key Features of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train

The train consists of 16 coaches: 11 AC three-tier, 4 AC two-tier, and 1 AC first-class. In total, the train offers a total of 823 sleeping berths, including 611 in three-tier coaches, 188 in two-tier coaches, and 24 in first class.

The First AC coach boasts luxury amenities such as hot-water showers, modern interiors, and upgraded comfort features to make long, overnight journeys more comfortable for passengers.

For safety, the train will be equipped with the cutting-edge safety feature Kavach 4.0, the latest anti-collision system, along with advanced fire safety mechanisms and a real-time communication network connecting loco pilots, train managers, and station masters.

Passengers can look forward to USB charging ports, individual reading lights, CCTV cameras, display panels, and modular pantries. In addition to this, special berths and toilets have been designed for differently-abled passengers, ensuring inclusivity and accessibility. It features automatic exterior passenger doors and sensor-based inter-communication doors.
