Defence Minister Rajnath Singh highlighted the unfair treatment of the national song 'Vande Mataram' by past governments. He stated that future generations must know about this biased approach. Singh emphasized that 'Vande Mataram' and the national anthem are like two eyes of Bharat Mata.

New Delhi: 'Vande Mataram' has been treated unfairly and the future generations need to know the biased treatment meted out by previous regimes, said defence minister Rajnath Singh on Monday while participating in a discussion in the Lok Sabha on the 150th anniversary of the national song.

Replying to jibes by the Opposition that the government was avoiding discussions on important issues like unemployment, Singh said, "One song - our national anthem - became a part of everyday life of the people. But the other - Vande Mataram - was treated shoddily. It was treated as an extra. It was truncated. The future generations need to know about the unfair treatment meted out to Vande Mataram. This is why we need to have this discussion... The unfair treatment of 'Vande Mataram' was a part of appeasement politics of previous regimes. 'Jana Gana Mana' and 'Vande Mataram' are like two eyes of Bharat Mata."

The defence minister said there was a need for an unbiased evaluation of 'Vande Mataram' and asserted that the entire song and the Anand Math book were never anti-Islam, but reflected the popular sentiments against the Nawab of Bengal and British imperialism. "Everyone has heard the first two stanzas of 'Vande Mataram', but many are not familiar with the rest. Most parts of the original version have been forgotten, and those stanzas depict the essence of India," he said.

He noted that 'Vande Mataram' is complete in itself, but there have been attempts to render it incomplete, calling for a return to the song's glory. Singh said some people found the novel Anand Math to be communal, and it was for this reason that 'Vande Mataram' was also targeted. "If we go back to that era, which Anand Math depicts, it becomes clear that the subject matter was not against any religion or sect. At that time, Bengal was suffering from a severe famine, and the Nawab of Bengal was collecting heavy land revenue from the starving population under pressure from the British. Anand Math was written against this injustice," Singh said.
