'Don’t Retire': Valentin Vacherot’s Touching Plea To Novak Djokovic After Shanghai Triumph
It was meant to be another step toward redemption for Novak Djokovic. Instead, it turned into one of the most emotional moments of the tennis season.
In a stunning semi-final at the Shanghai Masters, Valentin Vacherot, the rising star from Monaco, produced the performance of his life to defeat the 24-time Grand Slam champion 6-3, 6-4 — a result few saw coming.
The Moment at the Net
When match point landed, the roar inside the Qi Zhong Stadium gave way to something softer — mutual respect.
Djokovic, gracious as ever in defeat, met Vacherot at the net with a smile and words of praise.
“You deserve it. You played unbelievable. Keep it going," Djokovic told him, acknowledging the quality and composure that defined the young Monegasque's breakthrough victory.
But it was Vacherot's reply that resonated across the tennis world.
Visibly emotional and almost in disbelief, he responded with a heartfelt plea: “Such a pleasure to play at least once against you. Don't retire."
Djokovic's Missed Opportunity
For Djokovic, this loss may sting more deeply than most.
While defeats to Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in recent majors have come against players at their peak, this was meant to be a window of opportunity.
Both Alcaraz and Sinner — his biggest rivals in 2025 — had withdrawn from Shanghai, seemingly clearing Djokovic's path to a long-awaited Masters 1000 title, his first since 2023.
But once again, his body betrayed him. Fatigue and a lack of sharpness proved decisive, underscoring a recurring pattern in his season.
Even Djokovic himself has admitted in recent interviews that Alcaraz and Sinner “are levels above" him right now, but he remains determined to “stay in the fight and keep giving myself chances."
A Family Affair in the Final
Vacherot's fairytale run adds a new twist to an already unpredictable tournament. In a remarkable turn of events, he will now face his cousin Arthur Rinderknech in the final — a historic all-French-speaking family showdown that no one could have scripted.
