The US State Department said on Saturday that it was suspending all visitor visas for people from Gaza to conduct a “full and thorough review” of the process.
In a post on X, the US State Department said, “All visitor visas for individuals from Gaza are being stopped while we conduct a full and thorough review of the process and procedures used to issue a small number of temporary medical-humanitarian visas in recent days.”
The State Department however did not specify how many medical-humanitarian visas it has issued.
According to an analysis of monthly figures cited by Reuters, the US issued more than 3,800 B1/B2 visitor visas to holders of the Palestinian Authority travel document. This includes 640 visas issued in May.
The B1/B2 visa is used by foreigners to seek medical treatment in the United States.
Why did the US stop Gaza visas?
The US State Department's move to stop visitor visas for people from Gaza comes a day after Laura Loomer, a far right activist and Donald Trump ally said that Palestinian ‘refugees' have entered the US this month.Her claim sparked controversy among some Republicans. US Representative Chip Roy of Texas said it was a “national security risk”, and vowed to launch an inquiry about the matter and Representative Randy Fine.
While Gazans used to get medical visas to the US, the country has not indicated that it would accept Palestinians displaced by the war.
Laura Loomer takes credit
Laura Loomer on Saturday took credit of the stopping of US visas to Gazans, saying that the move came “following the release of my reports yesterday exposing flights of GAZANS arriving at airports all across the US.”Calling it a “fantastic news”, Loomer thanked Secretary of State Marco Rubio and hoped that all Gazans would be added to a “travel ban” list of Donald Trump.
“Thank you@SecRubio for your prompt response to this invasion of our country by NGOS that have been accused of being pro-HAMAS @marcorubio! Hopefully all GAZANS will be added to President Trump's travel ban. There are doctors in other countries,” she said.
“The US is not the world's hospital,” Loomer commented.
Over Friday and Saturday, she had raged against the matter, saying that “the Trump administration needs to shut this abomination down ASAP before a family member of one of these GAZANS goes rogue and kills Americans for HAMAS.”
