US Marines Going To West Asia? American Warship Tracked Off Singapore May Be Carrying Troops
The US Navy’s USS Tripoli, a massive amphibious assault vessel, was tracked off Singapore, possibly carrying thousands of Marines and sailors to West Asia amid the raging conflict in the region.
This comes after a mobilisation order from the Pentagon for the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), a premier rapid-response force. The details of the destination and mission, however, remain unknown.
According to a report by CNN, the USS Tripoli was tracked navigating strategically vital waters near Singapore. It was spotted approaching the Malacca Strait at the southwestern edge of the South China Sea on Tuesday morning.
The CNN reported that although US Navy warships typically operate with their AIS (automatic identification system) transponders deactivated to maintain operational security, this warship briefly activated its tracking data to ensure safer navigation through the high-traffic maritime corridors surrounding Singapore.
The report said operational uncertainty data from Marinetraffic.com indicated that an “unspecified US warship", later identified as the Tripoli, departed Okinawa on March 11. While this warship serves as the lead of an amphibious ready group, the full extent of its accompanying naval strike group remains unconfirmed.
The CNN said traditionally, it would include the amphibious transport docks USS New Orleans and USS San Diego. But maritime tracking has not yet verified their presence alongside the Tripoli.
The Tripoli is most likely carrying the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), which is an Okinawa-based unit comprising approximately 2,200 personnel.
Officials told CNN that the MEU was ordered to deploy to West Asia, but the specific destination and mission parameters remain strictly undisclosed.
An MEU is a highly structured force consisting of four key elements: command, ground combat, air combat, and logistics. These units are traditionally equipped for a diverse range of tasks, from conducting high-intensity amphibious raids and assaults to executing critical emergency evacuations.
Some components of the MEU are specifically trained for specialised operations, providing the Pentagon with a flexible “Swiss Army knife" capability in volatile regions.
A titan of naval engineering, the USS Tripoli measures nearly 850 feet in length and displaces 45,000 tonnes. It functions similarly to a small aircraft carrier.
The vessel is specifically designed to support advanced aviation assets, transporting F-35 stealth fighters and MV-22 Osprey transport aircraft, alongside various landing craft intended to move ground troops ashore. This combination allows the vessel to support both complex air operations and sustained ground assaults.
