US man gets infected with bird flu virus never before detected in humans: What is H5N5, its symptoms and how can you prevent it?

A Washington man has contracted the H5N5 bird flu strain, a first for humans. He is the first person to be diagnosed as having avian flu in the United States since February, and the first human ever known to be infected with the H5N5 strain. The patient was described as an older person who is severely ill and remains hospitalized after developing a high fever, confusion, and difficulty breathing.
A man in Washington, United States, has become the first person to be infected with 5N5 strain of bird flu, only detected in animals and never before in humans, reported New York Post. The “severely ill” man was hospitalized with a high fever, confusion and respiratory distress earlier this month. Later on, the man was confirmed to have H5N5, a subtype of avian influenza carried by wild birds like ducks and geese. The patient, an older adult with underlying health conditions, was hospitalised in early November with symptoms of avian influenza, the Washington State Department of Health confirmed.
This is the first case of human case of bird flu (H5N5) since February that has been reported in a Washington resident. The health agency noted that the man has a “mixed backyard flock of domestic poultry” at his home in Grays Harbor County, on the southwest Pacific coast of the state. “The domestic poultry or wild birds are the most likely source of virus exposure; however, public health investigation is ongoing,” the Washington State Department of Health said.

What are the symptoms of H5N5 virus?
Avian influenza, or “bird flu,” is a disease caused by Influenza A viruses that typically infect birds, as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). These viruses are naturally found in wild aquatic birds, which act as reservoirs.Symptoms of H5N5 virus can range from none (asymptomatic) or mild to very severe. Common symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle aches, and sometimes gastrointestinal issues like vomiting or diarrhea. Eye symptoms (conjunctivitis) have been reported, as per Johns Hopkins Medicine. Severe cases can lead to pneumonia, acute respiratory distress, or death, reports the Pan American Health Organization.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state health officials noted that the risk to the public is low. Though the risk of bird flu in humans is rare, understanding the critical signs and symptoms is crucial. No one else has tested positive for H5N5. There's no evidence of person-to-person spread, though experts have acknowledged that viral evolution can be “unpredictable.”

How does H5N5 spread and why is it a concern?
In birds, the virus spreads through respiratory secretions and feces. Humans typically get infected through close, unprotected contact with infected birds or contaminated environments (eg, poultry farms, live bird markets). Transmission can occur via droplets, dust, or by touching surfaces contaminated with bird secretions and then touching one's eyes, nose, or mouth, as per the World Health Organization.Influenza A (H5) viruses are genetically diverse and can reassort (shuffle genetic material), which means new variants may emerge, as per the World Organisation for Animal Health. While the current risk is low, “pandemic potential” requires vigilance particularly in animal populations where these viruses circulate.
What are the steps to prevent it?
Avoid close contact with sick or dead birds. Use appropriate protective gear (masks, gloves) when handling poultry or cleaning bird coops. Avoid raw or undercooked poultry, meat, eggs, and raw milk from infected animals. Public health agencies recommend ongoing surveillance and rapid detection of new human infections.Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now!
