US-Iran discussing 'in-person talks' but 'nothing is final' until Trump says so: White House
The White House is exploring the possibility of direct discussions with Iran. These talks are not yet confirmed. Iran has stated its agreement to meet with the United States. The White House has said discussions are underway over possible in-person talks between the United States and Iran, but stressed that no decision has been finalised yet, even as both sides move towards diplomacy following a temporary ceasefire.
Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday that while engagement is being considered, any confirmation would come only from Donald Trump or the White House.

“There are discussions about in-person talks, but nothing is final until announced by the President or the White House,” she said, after Iran indicated it had agreed to begin talks with Washington on Friday in Pakistan.
Ceasefire pauses six-week conflict
The remarks come after Trump announced a two-week halt to US military operations against Iran, describing it as a “double-sided ceasefire” tied to a broader diplomatic push. The pause follows a six-week conflict that began on February 28, when US and Israeli forces launched joint airstrikes on Iranian targets.Trump said the ceasefire was contingent on Iran ensuring the “complete, immediate and safe opening” of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil route. He added that Tehran had shared a 10-point proposal that he viewed as a “workable basis” for negotiations, claiming that most major points of contention had already been addressed.
Two White House officials also told Reuters that Israel has agreed to suspend its bombing campaign during the two-week window.
The announcement marked a sharp shift in tone from earlier in the day, when Trump warned that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran failed to reach a deal.
However, Iranian media has cautioned that talks with the United States do not signal an end to the war, underlining the fragility of the ceasefire.

Iran sets terms, Pakistan mediates talks
Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said Tehran would halt its “defensive operations” only if attacks against the country stop, signalling conditional support for de-escalation.He added that safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz could be coordinated for two weeks, subject to technical considerations and oversight by Iran’s armed forces.
Tehran’s 10-point peace plan reportedly includes demands such as continued control over the Strait of Hormuz, recognition of its uranium enrichment programme, lifting of US sanctions, withdrawal of American forces from the Middle East, and a binding UN Security Council resolution to formalise any agreement.
Meanwhile, Pakistan has emerged as a key intermediary in the process. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed that Islamabad helped broker the ceasefire, alongside Army Chief Asim Munir.
Sharif said both sides had agreed to an immediate ceasefire and invited delegations from Washington and Tehran to Islamabad for talks aimed at securing a long-term settlement. He also urged all parties to use the two-week pause to allow diplomacy to “achieve conclusive termination of war.”
Trump, in a post on Truth Social, acknowledged Pakistan’s role, saying Sharif and Munir had urged him to delay further military action, contributing to the current pause in hostilities.
