A dangerous heat wave is set to scorch the US Southwest, impacting over 80 million people with triple-digit temperatures from Wednesday through the weekend. Extreme heat warnings are in effect for parts of California, Nevada, and Arizona, with Phoenix potentially reaching 112 degrees. The NWS has advised Americans to consume fluids and remain indoors to avoid extreme heatwave in the US.
Extreme heat warnings and advisories have been issued for more than 80 million people across the US Southwest. National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists have warned millions across the Desert Southwest of a dangerous heat wave that will hike temperatures across the region later this week. The triple-digit temperatures are set to bake several states from Wednesday through the weekend.
Forecasters reported warm, descending air over Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico that's expected to scorch the region through the weekend. The heatwave advisory comes at a time when much of the United States has already faced sweltering temperatures this week, prompting extreme heat warnings and heat advisories across the central and southwestern US.

Heatwave warnings in US
According to NewsWeek, NWS meteorologists have predicted that temperatures will start to improve for the central U.S. beginning this weekend, more heat is in store for the Desert Southwest. States expecting dangerous temperatures are Arizona, California and Nevada. "An anomalously strong ridge of high pressure centered over the Four Corners states will lead to a significant heat wave," said the National Weather Service on Tuesday.Extreme heat warnings began on Wednesday morning in southern California for parts of Los Angeles, San Diego, and Orange counties. Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Tucson, Arizona were also affected. Phoenix, Arizona, is expected to reach a high temperature of 112 degrees on Friday.
In Las Vegas, Nevada, temperatures could potentially reach 110, while Death Valley National Park's Furnace Creek Visitor's Center has predicted 120 degrees, according to the weather service.
Many of the extreme heat warnings and heat advisories in place across the Desert Southwest will remain in effect through Saturday night. In a Wednesday morning forecast, the NWS warned that a "dangerous heat wave begins to build over the Southwest late this week."

NWS added that dangerous heat already in place will intensify and expand in coverage over the next few days. The high temperatures will last into the weekend and will spur "widespread heat-related warnings and advisories."
"This dangerous level of heat will pose a threat to anyone without effective cooling and adequate hydration. Highs into the 90s more broadly across the region will still pose a threat to anyone more sensitive to heat or engaging in strenuous outdoor activities," the NWS said.
Extreme heat returns in California
On Tuesday, 44 deaths for which heat was the cause or contributor were reported by Maricopa County officials in Arizona.Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said the city was expecting some "of the hottest temperatures of the summer." Cooling centers are being opened throughout the city; meanwhile, Governor Gavin Newsom has moved firefighting resources to the city.

"Extreme summer weather is returning to California this week. Now is the time to check the forecasts for your area and prepare for higher temperatures and dangerous fire weather," Newsom said in a statement.
"While the best thing we can all do is prepare now, the state is also pre-deploying resources to protect communities from catastrophic wildfire." Temperatures are expected to reach the 90s in Seattle by Sunday, according to the weather service. Portland, Oregon, also issued a fire weather watch for Thursday.
Tips to be safe during extreme heatwave
Many of the warnings urged people to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned rooms, stay out of the sun and check on relatives and neighbors who might be sensitive to the heat.ALSO READ: $63 billion in tax relief for America's seniors? "Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing," an extreme heat warning issued by NWS Hanford, California, said. "Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke."
NWS, in a Wednesday forecast: "A cold front will bring cooler, more seasonable highs in the 80s Thursday as the focus for hotter temperatures shifts into portions of the central Plains."
NWS Las Vegas, on X on Wednesday: "High pressure has returned to the Four Corners, which will result in temps increasing through Friday as well as the return of SE monsoonal flow aloft. The return of monsoonal flow will transport moisture into the area, which will help to fuel late week storms."
