US experiences extreme weather events across the country

US experiences extreme weather events across the country
Nearly every part of the United States is experiencing severe weather or is about to be affected by it.
In Hawaii, days of heavy rain have begun, while the Southwest braces for record-breaking heat exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). Additionally, two storms are set to blanket northern Great Lakes states with substantial snowfall, and the polar vortex is forecasted to bring frigid Arctic air to the Midwest and East.
This forecast of extreme conditions follows recent weather fluctuations in much of the East. Residents of Washington, D.C., experienced an unseasonably warm day on Wednesday, with temperatures reaching a record 86 degrees Fahrenheit (about 30 degrees Celsius), only to be followed by snowfall on Thursday.
Marc Chenard, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center in Maryland, noted, “All of the country, even if you’re not necessarily seeing extremes, are going to see generally changing from cold to warm, or warm to cold to warm.”
Ryan Maue, a former chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, indicated that he anticipates extreme weather conditions affecting all 50 states.
A heat dome is expected to form over the Southwest early next week, leading to unprecedented triple-digit temperatures for this time of year. Forecasts suggest Phoenix may reach 98 degrees Fahrenheit (almost 37 degrees Celsius) on Tuesday, followed by temperatures of 103, 105, and two days of 107 degrees Fahrenheit (almost 42 degrees Celsius). Historically, Phoenix has not recorded a temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit before March 26, with the first occurrence typically in early May. The National Weather Service warned that the early onset of such heat could have significant impacts due to a lack of acclimatization.
Los Angeles has already experienced unusual March temperatures reaching 90 degrees Fahrenheit, prompting residents to seek shade and wear summer clothing.
Shane Dixon, a local runner, remarked on the heat’s impact on his routine, stating, “The back of my neck was melting,” but he expressed a preference for the warmth over the cold and snow expected in other regions.
Simultaneously, the polar vortex is anticipated to push its chill deep into the Midwest and East, with temperatures around zero degrees Fahrenheit (-18 degrees Celsius) in Minneapolis and single digits in Chicago. The following day, temperatures in the teens and twenties are expected across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, with Atlanta potentially experiencing lows in the twenties.
Two storm systems are forecasted to traverse the northern tier and Great Lakes, with the potential to deliver 3 to 4 feet (0.91 to 1.22 meters) of snow. The second storm is predicted to intensify rapidly, qualifying as a bomb cyclone, a phenomenon typically associated with oceanic conditions but expected to draw energy from the polar vortex.
In areas just south of the heavy snowfall predicted for Michigan, meteorologist Jeff Masters indicated that a significant ice storm may develop.
Additionally, strong winds are anticipated from Kansas through Oklahoma to Texas, with gusts reaching 60 mph (97 kph) on Sunday night, raising wildfire risks in drier regions. Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen declared an emergency in response to wildfires that have scorched over 550 square miles (about 1,424 square kilometers) of land, fueled by strong winds and low humidity.
In Hawaii, persistent heavy rain from an atmospheric river has prompted flash flood warnings, particularly for Oahu. Meanwhile, Alaska is experiencing temperatures about 30 degrees colder than usual.
Marc Chenard stated, “It does seem even anomalous from what you would typically see. I mean, some of these areas will be setting records. Record-high temperatures for March and maybe multiple times.”
Recent tornadoes in Oklahoma, Michigan, and Indiana have resulted in at least eight fatalities. Although the immediate forecast does not predict widespread severe storms, isolated thunderstorms could occur from the Mississippi Valley to the East Coast.
Underlying these weather phenomena is a jet stream exhibiting unusual patterns, with sharp fluctuations leading to extreme weather conditions occurring in close proximity. Maue explained, “Which means you get a lot of extremes next to each other.”
Numerous studies have linked the erratic behavior of the jet stream and polar vortex to the effects of climate change and diminishing Arctic sea ice.
However, Maue remains optimistic, stating, “The first day of spring is 20th (of March), and then after that we get recovery.”
