US Expands Deportation Fleet As Boeing Completes $4.7 Billion Deal For Six 737 Jets
The US Department of Homeland Security is moving ahead with the purchase of a fleet of Boeing-made aircraft to support President Donald Trump's intensified deportation operations, even as Boeing completes a multibillion-dollar acquisition aimed at stabilising its own troubled production lines.
A Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman confirmed to AFP on Wednesday that the agency is buying Boeing jets for use by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“These planes will allow ICE to operate more effectively, including by using more efficient flight patterns," Tricia McLaughlin told AFP.
“This new initiative will save the US taxpayer $279 MILLION," she added, responding to a Washington Post report on the contract.
According to the report's account of the Post's reporting, the nearly $140 million deal covers six Boeing 737 aircraft, but was not concluded directly with Boeing.
Instead, the contract was signed with Daedalus Aviation, a firm established in early 2024.
The fleet acquisition underscores the Trump administration's efforts to accelerate removals of undocumented immigrants during his second term.
Human Rights First has reported more than 1,700 deportation flights to dozens of countries since Trump returned to office in January.
The administration claims more than two million undocumented immigrants have left the United States this year, 1.6 million voluntarily and the rest through deportations, while the broader crackdown, including operations by masked law-enforcement personnel, has prompted protests and legal challenges in several Democratic-led jurisdictions.
The developments come as Boeing on Monday finalised a major restructuring move of its own.
As reported by the Associated Press, the aerospace company has completed its $4.7 billion purchase of Spirit AeroSystems, the Kansas-based supplier responsible for building fuselages for Boeing's 737 Max jets, including the Alaska Airlines plane that suffered a mid-air door-panel blowout last year.
The deal returns Spirit, once part of Boeing before being spun off in 2005, to its former parent.
AP reported that Boeing sees the acquisition as a way to bring its largest provider of spare parts back in-house and to address persistent manufacturing disruptions that have slowed production of the 737 Max and 787 programs.
CEO Kelly Ortberg called it a “pivotal moment" for Boeing's future and said that as the companies integrate, “our focus is on maintaining stability so we can continue delivering high-quality aeroplanes, differentiated services, and advanced defence capabilities for our customers and the industry," according to AP.
Boeing announced its intention to reacquire Spirit in July 2024 as quality concerns mounted across its supply chain.
Those concerns intensified after AP reported that investigators found four bolts were missing from the Alaska Airlines jet's door panel following repair work conducted at a Boeing facility.
The blowout renewed scrutiny of Boeing's safety culture, already under pressure due to a criminal case stemming from two fatal 737 Max crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia in 2018 and 2019 that killed 346 people.
The report claimed that the case was resolved last month, when a federal judge approved the Justice Department's request to dismiss the charge as part of a settlement requiring Boeing to pay or invest an additional $1.1 billion in fines, victim compensation, and internal safety upgrades.

Boeing has said the total value of the Spirit acquisition is about $8.3 billion, and its shares rose 2.2 per cent on Monday, AP reported.
