US job growth slows as employers add 50,000 jobs in December, unemployment rate falls to 4.4% after weak year for hiring
US employers added fewer jobs than expected in December, capping a year of weakening hiring and adding to concerns about the health of the labour market, government data released on Friday showed.
Employment rose by 50,000 last month, slowing from a revised 56,000 in November, according to the Department of Labor. The figure fell well short of the 73,000 jobs forecast by economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires and The Wall Street Journal.
Despite the softer hiring, the unemployment rate edged down to 4.4% from 4.5% in November, offering a mixed picture of labour market conditions. Job growth has slowed markedly over the past year, while the jobless rate has hovered near its highest levels since 2021.
The latest data will be closely watched by investors and policymakers for clues on the Federal Reserve's next moves on interest rates. A sharper deterioration in the jobs market could strengthen the case for the central bank to cut rates sooner to support growth in the world's largest economy.
Sector-wise, employment continued to rise in restaurants and bars, as well as in health care and social assistance, the Labor Department said. These areas have been among the more resilient pockets of the labour market.
In contrast, retail trade shed jobs, with employment declining at warehouse clubs, supercentres and other merchandise retailers, highlighting pressure on consumer-facing sectors.
The report also pointed to a notable decline in public-sector employment. Federal government employment has fallen by 277,000 jobs, or 9.2%, since peaking in January, the department said.
