UPI volumes rise 27% YoY in February; daily transactions hit record 728 million
The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), operated by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), recorded a 27% year-on-year (YoY) increase in transaction volumes in February, even as monthly volumes eased marginally from January levels.
The average daily transaction count touched an all-time high of 728 million during the month, according to data released by NPCI on Sunday.UPI processed 20.39 billion transactions in February, compared with 21.70 billion in January. In value terms, transactions rose 22% YoY but declined 5.2% month-on-month (MoM) to Rs 26.84 lakh crore from Rs 28.33 lakh crore in January, which had three additional days.
Industry executives said the February data indicate that UPI’s expansion is becoming broad-based, with stronger merchant adoption and a shift toward larger-ticket payments.“February’s UPI data signals that digital payments growth is now structural, not seasonal. Beyond volume expansion, we’re seeing deeper merchant penetration and higher-value transactions, indicating that consumers are moving routine spends, not just small transfers, onto UPI,” said Siddharth Mehta, cofounder of fintech startup Kiwi.Other digital payment channels declined during the month. Aadhaar-Enabled Payment System (AEPS) transactions fell to 90 million in February, amounting to Rs 25,762 crore, compared with 99 million transactions worth Rs 25,907 crore in January. Immediate Payment Service transactions declined to 336 million from 374 million in January, while FASTag volumes dropped to 350 million from 373 million.ET had reported on December 22 that while UPI continues to see steady MoM growth, several other retail payment channels have either declined or expanded at a slower pace. PhonePe and Google Pay remained the dominant players in UPI transactions as of January. NPCI is yet to release app-wise data for February. Competition in the digital payments space is expected to intensify, with Apple in discussions with Indian banks such as ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, and Axis Bank to launch Apple Pay in the country around mid-2026, according to a Bloomberg report.For FY25, NPCI reported a 41.7% increase in net profit to Rs 1,552 crore, according to credit rating agency ICRA. As a not-for-profit entity, NPCI classifies profits as revenue surplus. Its revenues rose 19% to Rs 3,270 crore in FY25 from Rs 2,749 crore in FY24.
