The unified payments interface (UPI) witnessed a significant growth of 29 per cent in the number of transactions (year-on-year), reaching 21.63 billion in December. Besides that, it also reported a rise of 20 per cent in the transaction value during the year of Rs 27.97 lakh crore, the data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) indicated.
The UPI transaction count and the amount increased every month, and the growth was quite substantial.

In November, the UPI experienced a 32 per cent growth in the number of transactions year-on-year, which amounted to 20.47 billion—an increase in the value of transactions of 22 per cent annually at Rs 26.32 lakh crore.
On the other hand, monthly transactions through instant money transfer (IMPS) amounted to 6.62 lakh crore in December, which was a 10 per cent increase year-on-year and also a rise from 6.15 lakh crore in November.
The IMPS transaction count was at 380 million, which was higher than the 369 million in November. The average daily transaction amount through IMPS was Rs 21,269 crore, which was more than Rs 20,506 crore in November.
The latest report indicates that India has crossed the milestone of 709 million active UPI QRs, which is a rise of 21 per cent since July 2024. The widespread QR acceptance at kiranas, drugstores, transit areas, and even in the countryside has turned scan-and-pay into the nationwide standard payment method, as stated in the Worldline India report, IANS reported.
The P2M transactions have been the major contributor to the growth and thus have the first place over P2P; the use of UPI in the retail sector is most pronounced.
The number of P2M transactions increased by 35 per cent to 37.46 billion, whereas P2P transactions grew by 29 per cent to 21.65 billion, according to the report. The average ticket size has reduced to Rs 1,262 (previously Rs 1,363), which suggests that there is a growing tendency to use UPI for micro-transactions like mobility, food, health care necessities, and hyperlocal commerce.
Moreover, it is believed that India's Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) has been a pivotal factor in providing the whole population with access to services, thus reducing the gap between urban and rural areas.
