UP’s first state-level Braille library inaugurated at Shakuntala Mishra Rehabilitation University
Uttar Pradesh's first state-level Braille Library section was inaugurated at Dr. Shakuntala Mishra National Rehabilitation University. This facility, housing 4,000 Braille books, aims to empower visually impaired students with modern education and digital skills, fostering self-reliance and societal integration.
Uttar Pradesh's first state-level Braille Library section was inaugurated at Dr. Shakuntala Mishra National Rehabilitation University by the University' Vice Chancellor, Acharya Sanjay Singh. The state-of-the-art Braille Library is located on the first floor of the Swami Vivekananda Central Library.
The Vice Chancellor Singh paid emotional tribute to the great Louis Braille, the father of Braille, by garlanding and offering floral tributes to his statue on the university's Braille Press campus on his birth anniversary.
According to a release, issued by the UP's information department, this event was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor Singh holding the hands of visually impaired students and lighting a lamp, a symbol of inclusion and respect. On this occasion, he encouraged the visually impaired students to move towards self-reliance and directed the university administration to ensure that they are provided with modern computer training so that they can face the challenges of the digital age.
In his address, he particularly emphasized that Braille is a very powerful medium of education for the visually impaired, which plays a vital role in their overall development by connecting them to the mainstream of society.
Narendra Kashyap, minister of state (Independent Charge) for the UP' Backward Classes Welfare and Disability Empowerment Department, said that this innovative Braille Library houses 4,000 academic Braille books published by the university's own Braille Press, covering 54 different undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses, in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP).
This is the first state university in Uttar Pradesh to develop a well-organized library section with many Braille books. The library also features a spacious reading room, capable of accommodating over 150 students at a time, providing a peaceful and conducive environment for study.
The minister Kashyap said that in keeping with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's noble vision of universal education, this Braille library will not be limited to university students. Individuals with visual impairments will also be able to subscribe and benefit from its resources and continue their studies.
For this purpose, a comprehensive system of special, casual, and corporate memberships has been established. Special memberships will be available to scholars, researchers, academics, and other residents of Lucknow.
