The winter season can have some of the most challenging weather for babies' soft skin. The cold winds coming from outside, combined with dry air inside, can cause their skin to lose moisture easily. This can lead to dry patches, redness, and rashes appearing on their baby soft skin. Many new parents become concerned when their baby's skin starts to become rough and dry. Chandra Shekhar, founder of CuteStory, shares a simple bath routine and a few gentle skincare steps that can alleviate these skin issues and help keep their child's skin healthy and nourished.
Avoid quick and long baths
In winter, there is no need to bathe your babies every single day, as it can remove the natural oil from their skin that protects their skin and keeps it moisturised. Giving them a bath two or three times a week is enough. You can clean their face, hands, and neck area gently with a warm and soft cloth. This will help to keep your baby clean without even drying their skin.
Check the ideal water temperature
Like you, your child's skin can't take too much of hot water. In fact, it will do more harm than good to your child's skin, making it dry. It is essential to use the right water temperature. The ideal temperature should be 37°C, which is closer to their body temperature. Keeping the bathroom warm also helps the child enjoy the bath.
Avoid too much time in the water
On average, the bath time should also be less than 10 minutes. Use a mild baby soap and wash only over the areas that need to be cleaned, such as neck folds, armpits, and the diaper area. Using too much soap can make the skin dry, and after a bath, wrap your body in a soft towel to dry and pat the skin gently. Always avoid rubbing their skin harshly because they are not able to handle that much harshness.
Keep them moisturised
For a baby's wintertime skincare routine, moisturising is the vital step. Apply a gentle baby lotion, cream, or oil after a bath, which locks in the moisture. You can even moisturise twice a day as this will keep the skin soft and prevent dryness.
Never ignore baby rashes
To stop rashes and redness, avoid hot water, change nappies often, and dress your baby in light cotton clothes that feel soft on the skin. When you go outside, cover your baby's head and feet to protect the skin from cold air. If you see any dry patches, apply a gentle yet thick moisturiser. Always remember that a baby's skin is very sensitive to any type of skin problem, and it can make things worse for them.
