Uddhav Thackeray asks if an ‘undeclared NRC’ is being implemented across the country
Slamming the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Union government over the electoral process and SIR in Bihar, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray asked on Thursday (August 7, 2025) if the National Register of Citizens (NRC) had been implemented in the country without any declaration that it would be. “With SIR, this a serious question now. Sixty-five lakh voters have been removed from the list so far,” Mr. Thackeray said.
The election process had become a farce, the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray or UBT) leader alleged, asking why Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines had been been taken away now. Mr. Thackeray was speaking with reporters in New Delhi, where he attended an INDIA bloc meeting. He also visited Congress leader and the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi at the latter's residence and had dinner with him.
When asked about a possibility of alliance with his estranged cousin Raj Thackeray, who heads the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), and whether the INDIA bloc had any conditions for their allyship, he said that the two brothers (a reference to Mr. Raj Thackeray and himself) were capable to taking the decision by themselves, and that there was “no need to consult any third person about it”.
Targetting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Mr. Uddhav Thackeray said it was time for the country to have “a strong Prime Minister and a strong Home Minister”.
“Modi and Shah are not the Ministers of the country. They are the BJP's (Bharatiya Janata Party) prachar mantris [publicity ministers]. This government does not care for the interests of the country. It only serves its own interests. Every time there is a disaster, both of them [Mr. Modi and Mr. Shah] disappear. Manipur is still burning but nobody wants to go there. I can't give an advertisement, but the country needs a PM and an HM (Home Minister) now. Their mask of Hindutva has fallen off. These are the people who, along with their children, go to Dubai to watch the match with Pakistan. Look at Jay Shah. In fact, true patriots are those who don't keep any relations with Pakistan till they stop their terror activities,” Mr. Uddhav Thackeray said.
He called for a discussion in the Parliament over the resignation of former Vice-President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar. “Why was the Vice-President removed? What happened there? There should be discussion on it,” he said.
Raising doubts over Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), he called the election process “a farce”. “We are already opposed to EVMs. Now, the VVPAT machines have been taken away. Where does our vote get registered? How will we know? If this is the matter, why does the government even want to conduct a farce of holding elections? They should just declare the winners,” Mr. Uddhav Thackeray said.
When asked about the controversy over the Hindi language as part of a three-language policy in Maharashtra, he said his party did not hate any language. “But don't force any language on us. I ask the Hindi States — which is the third language imposed there? Was Hindi made compulsory for me since Class 1? And yet, here I am, speaking well in Hindi with you,” he said.
Taking a dig at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde over his current visit to Delhi, Mr. Uddhav Thackeray said he did not wish to speak of “the traitor” (Mr. Shinde led the split in the erstwhile unified Shiv Sena). “If he must have come to meet his owner (the BJP high command), why should I speak about it?” he asked.
Hitting back, Maharashtra Minister and Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) group leader Uday Samant said that Mr. Uddhav Thackeray should explain why he was meeting and having dinner with a man (Mr. Rahul Gandhi) who “goes on insulting (Hindutva icon) V.D. Savarkar”.
